I am very proud of my support for people like Bernie and AOC for their vision. I have always thought a country can be measured by how well it treats it’s poorest and most marginalized people. We have been doing a shit job here is the U.S.
This diary is not about assigning credit, as that does not matter, and every Democrat deserves some.
All that matters is that today Chuck Schumer, Nancy Pelosi, and Joe Biden are all proudly and loudly championing legislation that refocuses our economic efforts on specifically helping poor people.
It immediately makes me think of Reverend Barber and all the work he is doing toward this end. Thanks Reverend Barber, thanks progressives, thank you all Democrats for making this happen.
For too long we’ve been focused on “middle class” and “Small Business” ---who are fine people and organizations. It has always been at the expense of ignoring the poor, though. People afraid of addressing the poverty issues in this country.
I am so stricken here in Southern California where we have some of the richest people in the world and yet some of the highest homeless rates.
Today perhaps is the first legislation since before Reagan that is really focussed on helping poor people. I do believe this may be a good trend.
Is it enough? almost certainly not, but damn it feels good. It feels like the worm has finally turned.
Today I am going to get out the good mezcal, have a drink, and enjoy this moment
