Yesterday we switched some of the older list view pages, including the recent list or the diaries page as it’s known to some folk, over to the new story list view layout. This prompted a lot of feedback from the community which made it clear to me that several of my design decisions missed the mark. You all clearly wanted to be able to see more stories in less space. So, that’s what we are going to do. The image attached to this story shows what we are thinking:
- Put all the information for a single story onto a single line
- Tighten up the negative space wherever possible
- Remove the story images
I hope these changes add up to more efficient tool for combing through lists of stories. I understand this page helps you all curate groups, find stories that deserve more recognition and accomplish several other important community functions. Apologies to those whose workflows were interrupted.
We also heard feedback regarding the “ago” style timestamps. For some people it seems this made it difficult to pick up where they had previously left off. I am still puzzling this one out. We moved to this format because it makes it easy to determine recency, a big part of what makes news news.
What do you think? We’d love to hear about how you all use this page and how this new design might or might not fit your workflows.
