Apparently no one has suggested that today, April 1, 2021, would be the day that failed businessblob Donald Trump would be magically restored to the privileges of the presidency, while continuing to ignore most of the responsibilities of the office. And after the January 6, 2021 terror attack on the U. S. Capitol, it’s hard to joke about things like that.
President Joe Biden has now been president for more than two months, and he has already done much to bring basic human decency back to the White House. We’re still hurting. Everyone suffered, though in different ways. Now, thanks to President Biden, we feel that we can recover.
I don’t know exactly how satirical writers suffered during the blighted years of Trump’s maladministration. I imagine that they worried as much about being lined up in front of a firing squad as they worried about giving ideas to the Trump fascist regime.
There was also this sense that Trump made it difficult to come up with funny but obviously satirical stories, given what a self-satirizing dumbass he is.
Sarah Whitten interviewed Late Night with Seth Meyers writer Jenny Hagel for a CNBC article about late night comedy under Trump.
Hagel explained that much of comedy is about heightening the drama or silliness of the news for laughs. However, when it comes to Trump “most stories are already so surreal,” she said, making it difficult to satirize.
“A lot of times I would look at a story and go ‘where do we even go from here? Because this is already the most ridiculous version of this story,’” Hagel said.
Of course surreal, ridiculous and implausible are three different concepts. It’s easy to come up with something that fits one of those adjectives. To come up with something that is surreal, ridiculous or implausible and is also funny, now, that’s more difficult.
Here’s one example of an implausible story about Donald Trump: that he apologizes for anything. Trump doesn’t apologize in any way whatsoever. Maybe he’s given one of those insincere apologies, like “I apologize if I offended anyone?” Though I think that would have been news.
Trump’s got a lot to apologize for. “Hey, Mike Pence, sorry I tried to have an angry mob kill you. Are we cool?” Even without admitting to any crimes, Trump still plenty of other things to apologize for. “Hey, Brioni, sorry for making your suits look so bad.”
The open thread question: what would be a nice, funny, lighthearted, satirical story about Donald Trump apologizing for anything?
One thing I know for sure is that it’s nice to see Trump fading away. The bastard still has too many holdovers in the “deep state,” but those are going to be rooted out one by one. Hopefully all the people who were tricked into voting for him will come to their senses.
But for most of us, we can afford to only think about Trump occasionally, when we’re feeling a bit of morbid curiosity as to what the crook’s up to these days.
