There’s an interesting article in “The Hill” about next year’s Senate contest to replace retiring Republican Sen. Rob Portman of Ohio.
The article is primarily about venture capitalist J.D. Vance who is considering running for the Ohio GOP Senate nomination.
Some key points from the article:
-Vance, The Hill says, would be a “wild card,” scrambling the race that already features six prominent names considering running for the GOP nomination.
-While Vance, like so many other Republicans these days, is currently talking kindly about ex-president Donald Trump, other Republicans are already reminding people about previous criticism Vance made about Trump.
-Whomever the GOP nominates for Senate, especially if there does end up being a heated Republican primary, will likely face Democratic Rep. Tim Ryan, the most prominent Democrat currently running.
-There are others considering running for the GOP Senate nomination who are better known in the state, while Vance would likely have to increase his name recognition to Ohio voters.
-Vance is also author of the book, the “Hillbilly Ellegy,” published in 2016.
Should Ryan be able to avoid a heated Democratic primary of his own and come out with the Democratic nomination unscathed, this could present problems for whomever the Republican nominee is. Especially if someone like Vance wins the Republican nomination since he would have to thread the needle between his current pro-Trump rhetoric versus his previous criticism, which could turn off Trump supporters.
And, it bears noting, that flipping a Senate seat in Ohio next year would go a long way toward helping Democrats maintain control of the Senate.
