We’ve witnessed fewer people getting shots as most of the people that were going to have done so. I live in blue country which means I’m living it a state with a high vaccination rate and low infection rate. But we could do better. I’d much rather see us around 80 or 90% rather than the 70 we are getting close to now. However, I realize how fortunate I am when I look at these red states who have the deadly combination of low vaccination rate, little or no preventative measures, immersion in the RW fake news bubble, and a deadly fatalism. I will repurpose words from the abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison in saying that these people have made an agreement with the devil and a covenant with death.
I’ve been following the Washington Post vaccination tracker since the rollout began. This page is not behind a paywall, so you can all check it out. I’ve been observing the vaccination rate go down everywhere including blue states like my own. Today, though, I see the vaccination rates going up in 14 states, many of them red. These red hot zones in red country just might be waking up these people. Let us hope so. I get no pleasure out of watching people throw their lives away.
Some of the increases are statistically insignificant. One percent up and down in the last week is nothing than a slight bump in the road. Here are the states that are showing an increase over the last week in double digits.
- Oklahoma 21%
- Rhode Island 15%
- Texas 14%
- Utah 18%
- Missouri 21%
- Nebraska 69%
Of those states with double digit increases, my Rhode Island is the only blue state. We are a few points south of 70% having at least one shot, That’s better than most of the country, but it’s not good enough. Worse, we have urban areas, including my city that is down in the mid fifties for the percentage of people at least partially vaccinated.
I’m hoping that this increase is a beginning of a trend and not just a one week wonder.

I’m glad I qualified by title with the word possibly. I’m wondering if those numbers I’ve been seeing are the result of a database malfunction or an anomaly caused by the long 4th weekend. I’ll monitor these numbers for another week or so to see if there really is a trend, but I have a feeling I was a bit too optimistic
