Recently, while testifying in the Jan 6 investigation, Officer Michael Fanone received a typically inarticulate, hate-filled rant from some coward who somehow neglected to leave his phone number. Folks get these death threats all the time and it definitely can ruin one’s day. So here’s a suggestion: If the Infrastructure bill makes it to law, we should fix the phone system(s) in such a way that when we receive a phone call, we should be able to ID the caller.
For whistleblowers and others who wish to remain anonymous, there are other methods to transmit the information to reporters, for example via secure lines. But for too many cowards and psychopaths, the phone is an easy way to harass people. A few simple electronic and procedural revisions can shine the sunlight on these bad guys and allow folks to sue them into the dirt. . .which is the proper place for them.
