If you are diabetic, you need to read this. Last week I was hospitalized for several days, for tests for a condition that I still think was brought on by prescription drugs. I was in the hospital for a total of 51 hours, and had two tests, an angiogram, and an echocardiogram. Combined these tests took 1Hour and 20 minutes. So the overkill of the hospital stay is obvious, and will be painful once the bills start coming in. But unbeknown to me, sleep deprivation causes your body to become more insulin resistant. I can’t sleep in a hospital, not just because someone is taking your blood pressure, or drawing blood, or whatever, all night long, but also because there is no way to get comfortable in a hospital bed.
So as a result of two sleepless nights in the hospital, I have blood glucose readings between 200 and 300. I had an A1C of 6.3 in July, so I know how to control my diabetes, that is until sleep deprivation was added to the mix. I contacted my Endocrinologist and he has increased the doses of Lantus, but it’s still too early to know if that is going to help.
I just want to warn diabetics that if their doctor wants them to go to the hospital, consider all the problems that are associated with it. It might save your life.
