I still consider myself a Democrat, but I also agree with all of these statements:
*Modern anti-racism (as promoted by Ibram Kendi) is a deeply flawed ideology;
*Mandating equitable outcomes is impossible, misguided, and possibly unconstitutional;
*Merit, and meritocracies, are good things;
*We should promote equality of opportunity;
*Grades are not inherently racist;
*The "color blind" ethic of the 1960s Civil Rights movement is a valuable and useful ideal;
*Individuals are more than the sum of their immutable traits (more than their race, gender, sexuality, etc.);
*Secular and public universities should not require teachers/professors to swear allegiance to DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) in the form of mandatory DEI statements;
*"Defunding the Police" was the worst political slogan of my lifetime;
*Every single person who voted for Trump cannot be summarily dismissed as a racist;
*But the modern GOP does pose a serious threat to our democracy;
*Freedom of speech (and expression) is essential if we are to preserve our open and liberal society;
*No one has a right to shut down what is generally recognized as reasonable speech because they view that speech as a form of “violence”;
*Land acknowledgements are pretentious, useless, and stupid (sorry not sorry);
*The Rings of Power (on Amazon Prime) is an objectively (or aesthetically) awful show;
*Joe Biden is doing an excellent job as President and should run for a second term (as long as his health holds out);
*The passage of ObamaCare and the recent IRA (Inflation Reduction Act) were both historic accomplishments which moved our country in a more fair and just direction;
And I could go on. But the question is:
Am I still really a Democrat?
Quite a few on the Left now seem to view many of these opinions not just as wrong but as evil. But, at least for now, it remains unclear to how extensively that far Left has, or has not, infiltrated the Dem party.
Let me know !
