The 2022 Congressional midterms are over — except in Georgia. In the Peach State’s Senate race, incumbent Raphael Warnock (D) will go to a runoff against challenger Herschel Walker (R). State law mandates a runoff election if no candidate reaches more than 50% in the general election. As of this writing, Warnock leads with 49.42% to Walker’s 48.52%, with the remaining 2.07% going to Libertarian Chase Oliver. With 2711/2723 precincts reporting, it’s practically impossible for Warnock to get over the 50% finish line.
This will lead to a runoff election on December 6th, less than four weeks away. So, as of today, we’re already in the home stretch of a race that will be pivotal for the balance of power in the Senate, with Democrats likely to get 49 or 50 seats excluding Georgia.
We’ve been in a similar situation two years ago, when Democrats won two Georgia Senate runoffs to gain control of a 50-50 Senate in the 2020 election. Unfortunately, the situation today is worse than it was after the 2020 general election. Back then, Georgia Democrats came off the biggest victory in decades after Biden won the state against Trump. Yesterday, Republicans swept all statewide seats except the US Senate race.
With less than four weeks to go, a quick turnaround is needed to deliver a big runoff victory again. If you can, please chip in a few dollars for Raphael Warnock’s campaign via ActBlue.
