Many of you know that my mother has been living with me. She is an avid gardener. I guess the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. She loves a YouTube channel called Garden Answer. Some of you may also enjoy watching Laura’s (we actually refer to her as Garden Answer) videos. I do not. She drives me up the wall. My mom watches video after video after video in the morning while we drink our coffee and I read Daily Kos. I try to tune them out as much as I can but some things get through. She (Garden Answer) was putting together some open terrariums using old glass vessels and that got me thinking. I had a large glass water dispenser that I wasn't using that I thought could make a pretty cool closed terrarium. I bought a fern, gravel, charcoal and found some potting soil.
First I added the gravel.
Then the charcoal.
Then the potting soil.
Then I planted the fern.
And here’s the finished product.
The fern is a bit too big for it. The lid won’t fit if the ice container section is removed. I researched the best plants for closed terrariums. I was going to order them online until I saw that I’d have to pay for heated shipping. There’s a garden center an hour away that has a lot of plants for fairy gardens so I may check that out. I think I’d like to put a moss on the bottom and something tall and skinny in the ice chamber. However, it gave me the hit I needed.
But like all addictions it didn’t last long.
Now I can’t stop thinking about gardening and I’ve got about a zillion projects in my head. A stumpery arch. Growing mushrooms in my beds (I already ordered the spore). Building two new beds. Adding arbors for climbers? And on and on. At least that will give me something to blog about.
I’ve also been on a bit of a shopping spree.
And that includes online plant buying. I get bored and scroll through nursery websites. Yesterday, I decided to make a list of all of the plants I’d ordered.
I’ve concluded I have a bit of a problem. I need a client to hire me for a job to take my mind off of gardening because this is what my back yard looks like right now.
We still have a way to go. I’m not sure I’ll make it through March.
