Marietta Georgia Mayor Steve Tumlin vetoed a decision by the city council that would have made Juneteenth a city holiday.
The motion to commemorate the celebration which began when the end of formal slavery was announced in Texas was put forward by Councilwoman Cheryl Richardson, and passed 4-3.
Tumlin vetoed the decision, claiming that he wanted to add a veteran’s holiday along with a Juneteenth motion, an issue unrelated to the Juneteenth holiday.
The council failed to gain the additional vote needed to override the veto.
Cobb County previously made Juneteenth a paid holiday for county employees.
