Hi, so who is attending Netroots Nation in Pittsburgh? I’d love to submit a panel proposal, but I need a little help. This is my rough idea:
“Writing and Publishing the Political Memoir”
From Barack Obama's "Dreams From my Father" to Pete Buttigieg's "Shortest Way Home," memoirs not only serve as launching pads for future presidential campaigns, but they have a way of inspiring activists, organizers, and policy makers. The books offer insight into the public figures's understanding and approaches to public policy. But you don't have to be a politician (eg Michelle Obama's "Becoming") to write a memoir, your story as a community organizer or a leader on a particular issue can be inspiring, too. This panel will feature three or four memoir writers talking about their inspiration and journey from idea to publication.
I am looking for potential panelists. Does anyone come to mind?
I just sold my first memoir to Little, Brown. It’s called “Everything I Learned, I Learned in a Chinese Restaurant,” and it’s about growing up Asian American in the Black and white city of Detroit during the Reagan Revolution in the 80s, and coming out during AIDS. I was actually a Republican back then, and the book traces my journey to becoming a progressive. I’d love to share my thoughts on writing a memoir and then how to get it published!
Suggestions are greatly appreciated.
