It’s been obvious for some time now that Party Before Country is the GOP’s guiding principle, ifyou want to call it a principle. But they would never actually admit it in public. Until now.
In an interview with reporter Jonathan Swan, Mitch stated that he would support Donald Trump no matter what if Trump were to win the 2024 Republican nomination. No matter what.
Remember when Mitch said that Trump was responsible for inciting the insurrection? Not a deal breaker for Mitch.
“After you said that about him, I think it’s astonishing!” Swan said.
“I think I have an obligation to support the nominee of my party,” McConnell explained.
Swan wondered if there is anything a Republican nominee could do that would lose McConnell’s support.
The senator couldn’t think of anything.
If that wasn’t clear enough, Mitch gave this response when an incredulous Swan pressed the issue:
After Swan noted that Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) said she believes “there are some things more important than party loyalty,” McConnell said, “Well, maybe you ought to be talking to Liz Cheney.”
There you have it. To Mitch McConnell, nothing takes precendence of party loyalty. Mitch is a Republican first, and an American second.
But just to be absolutely sure he understood this stunning admission, Swan tried one more time.
“I’m actually trying to understand. Is there any threshold for you?” Swan asked.
“You know, I say many things I’m sure people don’t understand,” McConnell responded.
Yes, that’s right. Moscow Mitch proudly declares that there is literally no red line that Trump could cross that would be too much for Mitch. Obviously, that includes trying to overthrow the government.
Remind me again how the Republicans are the party of patriotism.
