Democrats must try to make the overturning of Roe a central issue in every campaign in the country from now until November.
This issue has the potential to shift some of the narrative from inflation and gas prices which hurt Democrats, to an issue which can help them gain some ground in the midterms.
A majority of Americans are with Democrats on the abortion issue, and if Dems can show voters how radical and out of touch with most voters the republicans are on this issue they might be able to do much better than expected in the midterms.
In some of these red states abortion is now illegal even in cases of rape or incest. This is insane, and way out of step with most voters positions even in these red states.
Democrats must ask every republican candidate these questions in every debate:
Do you believe that a woman who has been raped and impregnated by a rapist should be mandated by her state government to stay pregnant for nine months and be forced to give birth to a rapists’s offspring? Answer yes or no please!
Do you believe that a child who was raped by her father or uncle and made pregnant should be forced by her state government to give birth?
If you believe abortion should be allowed only in cases of rape or incest, what happens when a woman is raped and made pregnant and truthfully claims she was raped but the rapist claims it was consensual? Then what? Who decides whether it was rape or not? Who decides whether she should be allowed an abortion or not?
Should a woman who lives in a red state where abortion is illegal be allowed to cross state lines and go into a “blue” state to obtain a safe abortion?
If you think it should be illegal for a woman to cross state lines to obtain an abortion, how would you enforce this law?
How would you stop a woman from crossing state lines to receive an abortion in a blue state?
Would you charge a woman with a crime or murder if she obtained an illegal abortion?
These are questions Democrats must be willing to ask republicans in debates this fall. These questions would put republicans on the defensive and make them look like the radicals they are.
Every Democrat running for House or Senate must be willing to challenge republicans as much as possible in debates on these issues. This will help make it clear to potential voters what is really at stake with this issue.
