The Praetorian Guard (Latin: Cohortēs praetōriae) was a unit of the Imperial Roman army that served as personal bodyguards and intelligence agents for the Roman emperors. During the Roman Republic, the Praetorian Guard were an escort for high-rank political officials (senators and procurators) and were bodyguards for the senior officers of the Roman legions. In the year 27 BC, after Rome's transition from republic to empire, the first Emperor of Rome, Caesar Augustus, designated the Praetorians as his personal security escort. For three centuries, the guards of the Roman emperor were also known for their palace intrigues, by which influence upon imperial politics the Praetorians could overthrow an emperor, and then proclaim his successor as the new Caesar of Rome. In AD 312, Constantine the Great disbanded the cohortes praetoriae and destroyed their barracks at the Castra Praetoria.
The United States Secret Service (USSS or Secret Service) is a federal law enforcement agency under the Department of Homeland Security charged with conducting criminal investigations and protecting U.S. political leaders, their families, and visiting heads of state or government.[3] Until 2003, the Secret Service was part of the Department of the Treasury, as the agency was founded in 1865 to combat the then-widespread counterfeiting of U.S. currency.
If, and that’s a very big if. If the stories coming out (via the IG of the Department of Homeland Security) about the actions of the Secret Service in and around the 6 January 2021, there needs to be a wholesale change in the leadership, training and responsibilities of the Secret Service. There appear to be whole host of reasons for what actually or may have happened to and within the protective branch of the Secret Service torwards the end of the Trump Administration. One of the most obvious changes needed is a statutorily mandated cooling off period for agent assigned to a Protectee to work for said Protectee in any capacity. (Say like two years).
Another change might be assignment duration and rotation. And we don’t have time to go into the particulars of how this change should be implemented.
Today’s problems may have begun after 11 September 2001. Effective 1 March 2003, the Secret Service transferred from the Treasury to the newly established Department of Homeland Security. Maybe it’s time to transfer them back to the Department of the Treasury.
No law enforcement agency needs to have this much authority and be in this close of a proximity to power. It’s a recipe for corruption and abuse of power. Trump saw it and tried to corrupt it, He won’t be the last. Next time it’ll be someone a lot smarter than Trump.
