Oh crap.
I was taken in by a satire about Amy Coney Barrett which went viral back in 2018 before she was confirmed as a Supreme Court justice. Leave it to commenters to point this out. I appreciate everyone who enlightened me.
Unfortunately when I looked at the story and comments I was on a long line with my girlfriend who was getting her license renewed at the DMV. There’s no way to edit a story from an iPhone so I begged her indulgence and drove home to edit it on my laptop. I ended up getting lost on the way.
Now, finally at home, I don’t have time to change the diary because I have to go back and pick her up, so here’s the original version.
At least the fake story had a good photoshop of Coney Barrett dressed as a handmaiden.
I read Leaked video confirms disturbing history of Amy Coney Barrett’s faith sect: ‘Women were always crying’ in RawStory and thought of making an image of her in a Handmaid’s Tale outfit to post in a comment. Then I figured someone else had most likely already done this and I could post that. I looked it up and discovered that she had already done this herself and preempted anyone also from doing it. Here’s an article about her donning the costume among the many others you can find if you do an Internet search. Amy Coney Barrett Holds Press Conference In Handmaid's Tale Costume Just To Mess With Liberals.
She was quoted in the article as saying
- "If selected to serve on the Supreme Court, I look forward to forcing women to have babies and ushering in a Catholic theocracy. In fact, the first decision I want to hand down is that women who don't have at least seven babies will be executed."
- "All hail the Pope! All hail the Pope! All hail the Pope!"
- She took off the costume and was wearing a black judges robe under it. Then she said:"When you're getting accused of being a theocratic fascist, sometimes you just have to play along," she said afterward as she took off her red robe, revealing her normal black robe underneath. "It's fun to watch them freak out a bit."
I first thought this was a satire but as far as I could tell it really happened.
I looked it up in Snopes which didn’t refer to this press conference but had lots of interesting information in this article: Did Amy Coney Barrett’s Religious Group Inspire ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’?
What this tells me about Coney Barrett is that she was pretty damn smart and clever when it came to sending a message to the far right and has a sense of humor with a mean streak.
The mother of seven is married to Jesse M. Barrett, an attorney. I don’t know anything about her home life but I rather doubt she assumes the handmaiden role with her husband at home. I don’t want to be sexist here but I have a feeling she can fit this definition at times.
