Link to recent update from NHC on the rapidly-intensifying and likely catastrophic Hurricane Ian. The updated numbers on Ian are really bad.. Ian has cratered to 937 mb and is sustaining 155 mph winds. This may hit fort Myers as a Cat 5, and even if it hits as a high 4, storm surge could hit 15 feet.
1. Catastrophic storm surge inundation of 12 to 16 feet above ground
level along with destructive waves are expected somewhere along the
southwest Florida coastline from Englewood to Bonita Beach,
including Charlotte Harbor. Residents in these areas should urgently
follow any evacuation orders in effect.
2. Catastrophic wind damage is expected along the southwestern
coast of Florida beginning in the next few hours where the core of
Ian makes landfall. Preparations to protect life and property
should be urgently rushed to completion.
This is climate change. 12’+ storm surge is going to be deadly. My heart goes out to the most vulnerable parts of the population living in its path.
Akalib has much better detail here, so go check out their diary to get more info. I imagine Mark Sumner will also be weighing in shortly.
