By now, everyone has witnessed President Joe Biden’s visit to Kyiv on President’s Day. It was a show of support for Ukraine and President Zelensky on the anniversary of Russia’s attack on this sovereign country. This is the first time a president has visited an active war zone where there were no active American troops. Of course, Russia scrambled some MIGs which caused air raid warnings, but President Biden and President Zelensky were undeterred in their meeting, including a visit to the Ukraine Wall of Remembrance honoring Ukrainian war heroes.
This tweet from a Ukrainian writer shows how the visit and Biden’s presidency is a bright spot in this trying time:
And, President Biden even got some ice cream!
As expected the MAGA contingent in this country, led by Marjorie Taylor Greene, was as odious as ever on President’s Day. In fact, MTG actually tweeted something that violates her oath of office (she was in a Twitter tirade yesterday). I don’t want to give her tweet anymore engagement so here is a tweet reply where the tweeter just used a screen shot:
First of all, who the hell does she talk to? Everyone says this??? Secondly, if they got their wish, who is going to support all those red states? Florida and Texas are not going to support them. No military bases, no Social Security, no Medicare or Medicaid, no FEMA, etc. When they say stuff like this, I would generally ignore it, except for the fact that Kevin McCarthy has basically elevated her to an influential GOP leader.
Most importantly, this statement is a violation of her oath of office but sadly, not ONE Republican member of Congress, House or Senate, has denounced this in public. They are just as bad as she is because they are cowards. So far, I have only seen Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger denounce this, as people who support our democracy should.
Here’s a screen shot of Liz Cheney’s reply:
However, Cheney and Kinzinger are no longer serving as elected officials. The only elected GOP official I have seen state something publicly is the governor of Utah:
Even though I disagree with this person probably on 100% of his policies, this is brave saying this in public. I am sure there is a large contingent of MAGA voters in Utah who are in full support of Greene and are unhappy with this.
What I say to Kevin McCarthy and all the other elected GOP who remain silent…. you are complicit cowards. All of their reactions yesterday to the President’s trip shows they are firmly on the side of Putin and Russia’s aggression into Ukraine. And that is truly a sad commentary on them.
With all that said, I think it’s a good thing that the GOP is represented very publicly by Greene, Gosar, Boebert and Trump, to name a few. It gives Democrats the opportunity to continue to portray this party as entirely unserious about tackling any problems that face our country, unserious about helping everyday Americans and completely wedded to only obtaining power and money.
Talk about GOP in disarray… the Michigan GOP just elected an election denier to head their party. Wow…
Maddow had some thoughts:
Good lord… as I am writing this, it’s only Tuesday!
To close out, here’s Aaron Rupar’s tweet thread of Joe Biden’s speech in Poland. It was a good one!
Chat Away!
