The shooter has been identified as 39-year-old Francisco Oropeza.
Investigators said the shooter, 39-year-old Francisco Oropeza, was confronted by neighbors and asked to stop shooting because they had a young child who was trying to sleep. Oropeza responded by saying he would do what he wants on his property.
Capers said Oropeza escaped the area after the shooting. Several guns were recovered from his home by a SWAT team.
"The suspect...we don't believe him to be in the area," Capers said. "He's at least 10 to 20 miles away from here."
Capers said Oropeza was known to shoot his rifle in the front yard and that they've had numerous calls to the area. The sheriff's office said he has been charged with five counts of murder.
Another sobering report from Greg Abbott’s Texas.
Late Friday night, a man, described by deputies from the San Jacinto County Sheriff’s Office as “a Hispanic man who is 5 feet 8 inches tall” with “a goatee and short black hair”, was drunkenly shooting his AR-15 outside on the front porch of his home just outside Cleveland, Texas. Neighbours from the other house asked him to turn down the noise because a baby in their home is trying to sleep. Enraged by the request, the gunman began shooting his AR-15 inside the neighbours’ home, where 10 people were present; all 10 were Honduran immigrants. Five people, including an 8-year-old, were dead as a result of the shooting; the 8-year-old died in hospital. Three other children, who were “covered in blood”, were also taken to hospital.
Authorities responded to the shooting at around 11.30 pm.
Sheriff Greg Capers told Eyewitness News that the victims were shot from the neck up, "almost execution style."
"When we got here, the two females in the bedroom were laying on top of two of three younger (surviving) children," Capers said.
An arrest warrant for the suspect, who has yet to be publicly identified, has been issued by a judge; the suspect faces a $5 million bond. However, San Jacinto County Sheriff Greg Capers stated that the suspect is identifiable thanks to Ring doorbell footage.
Cleveland, Texas, a small town about 40-50 minutes northeast of Downtown Houston, has gained notoriety for the 2010 gang rapes of an 11-year-old girl. Another gang rape may have also occurred in 2013, this time involving a 15-year-old girl.
