Welcome to Another Saturday Night of music, memories, and conversations.
My birthday was a couple of days ago, and I’m still celebrating. Hey, it was a decade-changer, I get to celebrate for a while. I looked for songs about chocolate, there’s not as many as you’d think.
I found a new-to-me Beatles song. George Harrison wrote it about Eric Clapton’s very deep love for chocolate. Beatles — Savoy Truffle
And you can’t cover a subject like this without Sarah McLachlan - Ice Cream. Also, just the joy in this performance, the audience singing to her, gives me goosebumps even all these years later.
There’s a Snow Patrol song called Chocolate. It’s pretty obviously not about the food. Gary’s lyrics are….quirky. It turns out he wrote this on the ferry ride home after cheating on his then-girlfriend. (Maybe she’s the girl in Planets Bend Between Us, You Could Be Happy, or any of a dozen “ex girlfriend” songs he has written. He also has a song with Taylor Swift, called The Last Time. I always think of him as sweet & adorable, but he writes an alarming number of breakup songs.) From Song Meanings, about this one:
His lies are addictive making everything about him seem sweet. When he gets caught, things get sticky. When things heat up, his lies melt, is afraid of losing his girlfriend and wants to regain her trust.
Snow Patrol — Chocolate
And I couldn’t find a U2 song about chocolate, cake, or anything else food-related. But it’s my birthday and they’re my boys. They just released this song a few months ago, and it is so happy and positive. My favorite lines:
Love is God and God is Love
And if your dreams don't scare you, they're not big enough
U2 — Atomic City
And my favorite U2 song changes day by day, or even more often. But this video is cheesy, and it does have a lot of love-of-my-life Adam Clayton, so here’s Discotheque:
Gentle reminder: Please continue to put the name of your selection in your comment along with your song. Those of us on our phones? We really appreciate it. And people using screen readers need this in order to identify the video.
You know how this works — Put your quarter in the slot and your song in the comments. This is your Saturday night jukebox and the party starts NOW~!
