Update: new president Bernardo Arévalo indicates that the inauguration is proceeding now as it should.
Note, I continue to link to Twitter because rapid distribution of information about late-breaking events was precisely what made Twitter so valuable to our information infrastructure. The platform has allowed grassroots movements and people with expertise on a subject to share information quickly with the audience that needed to hear it. And that is precisely why Elon and his cohort want to destroy Twitter. It empowers people who would otherwise have little power.

At this moment Guatemala is experiencing an attempted coup. The president-elect's party is being detained inside the congressional building and police are deploying tear gas against pro-democracy protesters outside.
Doesn't this seem familiar?
Does it seem portentous of 2025?

I've been chatting with my Guatemalan friend about it for the past three hours. He says the power and internet have been out intermittently during the day, which I interpret as possibly being a bad sign.
I'm planning to go visit him next week. This will be an interesting backdrop for what will be our third date.
