I just spotted a video based on a Bloomberg report (requires subscription, but Newsweek and a lot of other news orgs are reporting it as well) about a major corruption scandal in the Chinese armed forces. Xi apparently started a crackdown sometime last summer and a number of senior officers (at least 9) and associated high level non-military politicians have been “disappeared”. It appears that a lot of heat is on the Rocket Forces, but both regular army and navy officers have been purged.
China’s military may have many of the same problems as Russia has shown. Chinese missiles with their fuel tanks filled with water, missile silos with non-opening lids, jet planes being drained of fuel to cook hot pots. Not sure what got an admiral canned.
It looks like the crackdown is continuing and there’s speculation about just how big a setback this will be for Xi’s ambitions to become a (more) major power in the region. Given the stakes for the perps and any political backers, there may be a lot more turmoil and frantic coverups to come.
