I moved out of my family’s house when I was 15. One of the first places I lived was what anyone would call a “hippie house”. Lots of pretty cool people lived there and we had dinner family style most of the time. We all took turns grocery shopping. Well, until it was my turn that is. The shopping list I was given included “cheese”, and I brought back Velveeta. That night I got a 3 hour lecture on cheese.
The other thing this group of hippies did was dumpster dive. Our living room floor was carpeted with sample blocks from a carpet store dumpster, all pieced together. It was pretty psychedelic!
I met a lot of people who dumpster dived (dove?) back then and a few when I first moved to Nashville. I was delighted when I found dumpster diving on You Tube.
My favourite diver there is a woman who gets so excited about everything she finds. She also gets pretty pissed when she finds things like a trash bin of Ugg shoes that have been spray painted because the store didn’t want anyone to get any of them. Why? They couldn’t donate them?
Or when a store will throw out food but destroy it. Like pet food stores that throw away food that has not been recalled and is still within the sell by date, but they slice open the bags so no one can have them.
This dumpster diver has yard sales every Saturday where everything is free. She also knows all the places in her town that offer community services. When she finds packs of unopened diapers, she donates them to a group that helps young mothers.
I don’t know how to embed shorts from You Tube but click on these and you’ll see what she does, they are all less than 2 minutes.

Looking at those videos let me to videos of people who buy pallets of things. Now, that was odd because I just bought a bin of clothes from a woman who buys pallets. I paid $30 for 30 items of clothing. Not sure I would do it again.
The clothes were supposed to all be my size, but they weren’t, they were mixed sizes which was disappointing. I did get 4 sweaters and 2 shirts though. Some stuff was brand new, still had the tags on and were from Talbots and J Jill (I like J Jill clothes).
I didn’t go by the prices on the tags though, I went by Goodwill prices. I get all my clothes at Goodwill and many still have the price tag on. There was a dress that had a tag for $128, but it was a small. My neighbor kids will get some of these clothes and a friend the rest.
I had never heard of this “pallet buying” and found it quite interesting, so I’ve included some short videos (13 minutes or so). This first person has over 4 million followers. There are a lot of people who do this, I just really like these 2. The first one has so much fun and the second one, a couple, are fun and explain everything about the process.
Have you ever dumpster dived? Did you know about buying pallets?
They have a commercial in the beginning, just scroll on by...
I can’t resist one more container video. This guy Eddie Hall The Beast goes to hilarious lengths to open the packages and find the treasures.
