Over the past few years, Michigan has gone from having some of the most restrictive voting laws in the country to among the most progressive.
In 2018, we overwhelmingly passed Proposal 3, which, among other provisions:
- Codified the right to a secret ballot
- Ensured access to ballots for military & overseas voters
- Locked in the right to straight-ticket voting
- Added automatic voter registration
- Allowed registering to vote up to & on Election Day
- Allowed anyone to vote by mail/absentee
- Required election results to be audited for accuracy/inegrity
But we weren’t done yet!
In 2022, we (again, overwhelmingly) passed Proposal 2, which also:
- Recognized fundamental right to vote without harassing conduct
- Requires military or overseas ballots be counted if postmarked by election day
- Provides voter right to verify identity with photo ID or signed statement
- Provides voter right to single application to vote absentee in all elections
- Requires state-funded absentee-ballot drop boxes & pre-paid postage for absentee applications and ballots
- Provides that only election officials may conduct post-election audits
- Allows donations to fund elections, which must be disclosed
- Requires canvass boards certify election results based only on the official records of votes cast, and…
- Requires nine days of early in-person voting...starting in 2024.
Well, as it happens, today is 10 days our from the Michigan 2024 Presidential Primary election, so it’s the first day of early voting here in the Wolverine State!
Anyway, this just seemed like a good excuse to urge folks to also DONATE TO MICHIGAN DEMOCRATS to help ensure we keep our blue trifecta for another two years!
While you’re at it, since we have an open U.S. Senate seat to defend, how about chipping in a few bucks to help Elissa Slotkin (& other Dem Senate candidates) while you’re at it?
And of course we desperately need to flip the U.S. House blue as well...and Michigan has two open seats to defend and one GOP-held seat which is flippable. Donate today!
