Welcome to Another Saturday Night of music, memories, and conversations. One of music’s many uses is comfort. I hate March, it has anniversaries of two significant deaths and it’s just really hard. If you know me, you know I listen to a lot of U2. (yes, understatement) Probably half of U2’s songs have at least some reference to Bono’s mother; this song from 2014’s Songs of Innocence helps me when I miss my mom too much:
I’ve seen for myself
There’s no end to grief
That’s how I know
That’s how I know
And why I need to know that there is no end to love
All I know and all I need to know is there is no end to love
U2 — California
There’s Iris:
The ache
In my heart
Is so much a part of who I am
Something in your eyes
Took a thousand years to get here
Something in your eyes
Took a thousand years, a thousand years
Hold me close, hold me close and don’t let me go.
Hold me close like I’m someone that you might know
Hold me close the darkness just lets us see
Who we are
I’ve got your light inside of me
Snow Patrol’s album Wildness has a lot of comfort music for me; this one was my security blanket when I really needed one.
It shouldn't need to be so f-ing hard
This is life on earth
It's just life on earth
It doesn't need to be the end of you, or me
This is life on earth
It's just life on earth
Snow Patrol - Life On Earth
And the song that contains my mantra:
….it hasn’t finished you, it’s only that it feels that way
This one is tricky, because it’s got comforting parts and really sad, but these words:
Breathe deeply in the silence
No sudden moves
This isn't everything you are
Just take the hand that's offered
And hold on tight
This isn't everything you are
There's joy not far from here
I know there is
This isn't everything you are
(I always stop right after that part, because the conclusion leaves me sobbing, so fair warning, it’s a sad one. Gary is really good at both sweetness/comfort and just smashing your heart to bits.)
