UPDATED 1-13-Want to send Armando and Georgia10 as emissaries to ask for filibuster?

Thu Jan 12, 2006 at 07:17:20 PM PDT

SEE PART 2 OF THIS DIARY IDEA HERE: http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2006/1/13/12519/4067
Let's send Armando and Georgia10 to DC to get the dems to deliver on the much-needed filibuster!! I am writing this diary to ask kossacks if we might want to send an emissary to DC to speak to both Reid and Dean to implore them to go for the filibuster. We have saved it for precisely this moment. Hell, we let medicare part D and the bankruptcy 'reform' slip through BECAUSE we were saving the filibuster (under threat from bushco? good god!)

UPDATE 1/13/06 11:10am Miss Georgia10 cannot go. Okay.... there seems to be popular support to send Armando, Hunter and MaryScottOconnor. I will try to contact each of them and see if they can go. Then we can do another diary for donations. See further update below.

It is time. ;More below the flip.

I have been out sick from work this week and have been able to follow the confirmation hearings on cspan and dkos. Armando and Georgia10 have consistently kept us apprised with both commentary, news, and legal and constitutional analyses that have been objective and spot on. Their legal and moral grasp of the reasons Alito is constitutionally unfit to serve on the supreme court is unparalleled (though many others are right there on the playing field).

We can write letters, faxes, e-mails and sign petitions and write LTTE's, but, honestly, why not move take the netroots to an up close and personal posture.

And let's call them our EMISSARIES.

em·is·sar·y n. pl. em·is·sar·ies An agent sent on a mission to represent or advance the interests of another.

If senators and house reps and other public officials can post on Kos to be heard, then we can meet them in their forum.

We have to be extraordinary.  This is the Supreme Court. It's OUR constitution.

I don't think it would take much to raise the funds to get him to DC.

What do you guys say?

UPDATE 1/13/06 10:00am EST. What to do? Overwhelmingly, kossacks want to send Armando and Georgia10 to DC to make our demand for filibuster known. Georgia10 unfortunately cannot go; she begins classes Saturday. Oh well! Next time!

Armando, however, said he would go pretty much if it made sense to go. There are several arguments in the comments that say to stick to the tried and true (call, fax senators constantly), or some comments that do make some sense in that who would Armando be representing, how many people does this amount to? 500? That it's a a drop in the bucket. Or the the comment that we would be better off supporting orgs that are already there lobbying.

This is my take on these latter counter arguments:

1. We are a street level organization and if that doesn't have any pull with our senators (or so they think) then we just prove to them that it does. I don't care if it's only 600 kossacks or 1000 kossacks who support this as opposed to the 70,000 with accounts. The active kossacks who are participating are representing ALL 70,000 who are not participating. As in, the ones participating here RIGHT NOW are the ones in the street window making the gestures and the noise. And there are how many hits on this site each day? May as well be all 70,000 registered participating. And if the dems do not filibuster? There will be a lot of noise on here that those dems do not want rattled into the blogosphere. I think we have power. If we don't, then we need to find out that we don't. So we can change the way we do things. How many of us have sat here, incredulous, when something really heinous passes both houses? Shocked and horrified. We have to do something a little outside the box on this. IMO.

2. I think sending Armando, who so eloquently communicates the spirit of why Alito is unsuitable, WITH a delegation of DC-area kossacks, preferably dressed in the organge of the Kossack Nation would truly punctuate how serious we are about this. We may be just a drop in the bucket population-wise, but poll-wise, we do represent many americans. Shoot, the main pollsters only poll 500 to 1000 people and we get poll ratings on approvals for bush, the war, state of the economy, etc, and everyone takes those numbers to the bank!

3. Not sure where to go with this now. As I said, I had a mini-conversation with Armando. He will go if called to do so. God, we HAVE to do something different. We are already doing all the tried and trues, and will continue to do so. Frankly, I want to send in an Orange Briggade. With all the notoriety we have received of late thanks to Markos, everyone will know who we are. And as a commenter said below, they will probably be muttering, "omg, they have come out from behind their keyboards!" LOL

4. If we have additional funds, there are great suggestions on what to do with them. I personally like the idea of giving it to yearly kos, because it goes to the same idea: up close and personal activism. But those who gave can vote on what to do with that money when/if that day comes.

5. Let's go for it. Let's start taking donations. Any known person around here want to lead that?

UPDATE 11:20pm EST. I hope it's okay with those who voted befor this diary was changed... but we need to also send a woman, and Georgia10 has been nominated with good reason. So I have hopefully updated the diary to show a request for two emissaries.

      •  Send georgia10 too !! (4.00 / 18)

             Women's voice, women's choice, etc.
      •  Here's a letter I sent Dick Durbin and Barak Obama (4.00 / 7)

I think it is important to keep in mind that this is a life long apointment to the Supreme Court. It's like any lawyers dream: we expect the person to be very reasonable, calm, and convincing like Judge Alito (and the Senators). That is not the case, and I am NOT saying Alito is a bigot...his record clearly shows that he is not.

But that does not mean I think Samuel Alito shouldn't be filibustered. With the revelations of Jack Abramoff and that BushCo has been issuing unwarranted wiretapping and spying (probably over the internet) on domestic citizens it is clear we have a Party that has an "unnatural" control of all 3 branches of the federal government. By "unnatural" I mean they won on dirty money and dirty tricks....they've been running "trust me" campaigns for 5 years and judging by Jeff Gannon/Williams Armstrong, Jack Abramoff, and Iraqi body armor shortages in addition to no real WMD threat: that trust is clearly gone.

Alito has a history of telling people what they want to hear. He forgets any past grievences or claims "that was his opinion at the time." His opinions always change to reflect that of his current employers...and his employers tend to have been the same people over and over and over again...why should I think he check, what has become an extreme, abuse of Power by George W. Bush? I'm tired of DC being run like a frat-house. That's why people like Alito land all these prestigous jobs and probably helped him get into Princeton in the first place: they're willing to join any organization that will further their goals. And how can Alito "not recall" anything about Concerned Alumni of Princeton except that he joined to protest ROTC being kicked off campus for a whole year (oh boo hoo, try being kept out for 100).

No ones saying he's dumb. No one's saying he's a bigot. He constantly repeats the same coached line (probably by Senator Lindsey Graham) that he "constantly went above and beyond" and then cites situations that to be quiet frank, I would hope anyone would do...it's kind of his job. And let's not forget if Alito doesn't land this job he's never going to have to worry about employment. I don't want a judge who goes "above and beyond," above and beyond is what leads justifying 10 year olds being stripped searched...something Sandra Day O'Connor would never had done (clearly demonstrating he lacks her proclaimed empathy).

Which is why I say it's time to take a stand and filibuster until George W. Bush picks a better appointee...again.

        Lobbyists are an elective option.

A group of citizens can all show up to speak to their reps, or they can send someone as a spokesperson.

I guess lobbyists are spokespersons, but they sell their soul and do it only for money.

I don't suppose Armando would charge us $150,000 for his 'services.' lol

        •  As a former lobbyist (4.00 / 9)

          I have to correct you.

You are right that Armando would not have to register as a lobbyist for this occassion, but you are wrong that "lobbyists sell their soul and do it only for money."  Only some do.

Under the Lobbying Disclosure Act, a lobbyist is "any individual who is employed or retained by a client for financial or other compensation for services that include more than one lobbying contact, other than an individual whose lobbying activities constitute less than 20 percent of the time engaged in the services provided by such individual to that client over a six month period."

Under this definition, someone who works primarily on legislative issues for a group like the Children's Defense Fund, or the Sierra Club, or Common Cause, or the State of Oregon, or the U.S. Conference of Mayors, or the AFL-CIO, or Planned Parenthood - is considered a lobbyist. The vast majority of these people are not in it for the money.

In fact, I would guess there are more "lobbyists" employed by public interest, nonprofit or governmental groups than lobbying firms, law firms and corporations.  You just don't hear about them because they don't have the money to throw lavishes gifts at Members of Congress.

I spent four years as a "lobbyist" for a small nonprofit group working on issues related to disadvantaged and at-risk children.  Trust me, not a single person there was doing it for the money.

    •  Here is another approach: (4.00 / 3)

Former U.S. Senator, former Democratic Vice Presidential nominee, John Edwards has come out yesterday with a "Filibuster Alito" Petition drive which is absolutely deserving of our full support.

My diary on it last night - here - barely missed the recommended list.

With all due respect to our friends, Armando and Georgia, John Edwards has some real clout. I think is particularly true since he got out in front on the Iraq issue.

Please go to and sign the Petition. I think it could very well make the difference.

      •  I like him, but... (none / 0)

F' Edwards. If he had wanted to fight for the people, there was a damn fine time when he could have stood up and done it, and he didn't.
        •  I've addressed this before, (none / 1)

          but will do so again.

Assuming you are talking about Kerry throwing in the towel on Ohio, the morning after Edwards had come out at 3 am to say there would be no concession and every vote would be counted, it was Kerry - not Edwards - who gave up. Edwards argued in favor of fully investigating all election issues arising in Ohio and contesting the certification if it was possible to do so, but was vetoed.

Kerry quit on us. Not Edwards.

Exactly how do I happen to know this to be the case? Well, I can't exactly say, but here is a hint.

          •  OK... (none / 0)

But you really think anything coming from him now has any pull, media or political? No. He's marginalized by the loss, and thus would be marginal at best representing us in a fight at this time.
            •  I expect he may be the next President. (none / 0)

No, I am not necessarily making a prediction, but he is definitely running and will, I have no question, do well.

So, imo, John Edwards is not marginalized. Not at all.

Kerry still has the platform of being in the Senate, but is marginalized by the loss, I would say.

Of course, I would also say Kerry would have won if he had run a more aggressive campaign, which would have started with turning Edwards loose to take about social justice issues.

A contact is generally taken with seriousness roughly proportionate to the effort required to make it.  If you've only written emails and/or "signed" virtual petitions, please please please also make a phone call, or send a fax, letter, or telegram.  Emails and e-petitions are better than nothing at all, but not by much.

      Fax (202) 228-3954

      Dear Senator Feinstein,

You have clearly recognized and courageously stood up for many aspects of the bigger picture here.  I know, without the slightest doubt, that you understand what's at stake for the American people with this nomination. On this one decision swings our Constitution, WHICH IS OUR WAY OF LIFE.

Filibuster this nomination for all you're worth and PERSUADE YOUR COLLEAGUES on both sides of the aisle  TO JOIN YOU.
Diplomacy and comity notwithstanding, Senator...ALL IN, NOW or not ever.
Do not back down now.  We have your back.
This is what the powder's been kept dry for Senator!
The American people HAVE YOUR BACK!!!
I have every confidence that you will succeed.

FILIBUSTER THIS APPOINTMENT NOW, FOR AS LONG AS IT TAKES to drag the whole messy, corruption-ridden, death-laden, woman-controlling, property-taking, people-torturing, world-alienating, money-laundering, no-bid contract giving, dumb-downing, frankly frightening neo-conservative agenda, with ALL of its appalling and UNAMERICAN tentacles out onto the Senate floor where it belongs, while not just CSPAN, but the entire mainstream American media is still watching.  We'll not have another shot like this shot.

Get a good night's sleep Senator Feinstein.
You are much loved and respected in California and around the world.

      Your voter,

I know that some of you have serious and valid opposition to Senator Feinstein's record.  This is not the place for me to try to communicate that to her, and it is my strong feeling that letters to her encouraging a filibuster should empower, not chastise.  We want her to want to do this, not kick herself.
