I'd like to first congratulate all the participants in the Gannon/Guckert/Plame investigations.
Now could you please make some room on the Recommended List for someone else?
There were other stories this week and some of them actually relate to fascism. If you have been enthralled by the Gannon investigation and missed all these other Diaries please see below the fold.
This week I would like to introduce everyone to
my personal nightmare scenario and ask anyone who wishes to comment on it and add their own scenarios.
What is the
primary concern for a Fascist party? To stay in power! Why would the President press
so hard for Soc. Sec. reform? I know he is a “lame duck”
and does not expect (more on that later) to be re-elected. Could he
really believe that Soc Sec. is the greatest problem facing this
country? Does he really think that spreading insurrections worldwide
will increase our security? Does he really believe that our Military
must have the capacity to take on the rest of the world? I'll give
him that one.
My nightmare goes
something like this. First antagonize the rest of the world to the
point that there becomes a serious backlash against America. This
will increase nationalism and further alienate the left. Let
me remind everyone that the left is the historic enemy of fascism.
With increased opposition both home and
abroad there would be a need for more draconian security measures.
Therefore they will need more forces at home. This is starting with
the withdrawal of troops from Germany, South Korea, and Iraq. Iraq
was the perfect training ground for urban warfare and police action.
The new Iraqi theocratic regime will complete troop withdrawal and
when the President balks the international community will call for
complete U.S. withdrawal and probably offer peacekeepers.
Now we have that
pesky 22
nd amendment. First we
have Arnold's friends calling for its repeal and this week
E
danger 6 brought to light the fact that there may be
No
term limits for Bush? 22cd amendment under fire. What makes this
part of my personal nightmare scenario is that this amendment is
being proposed by Rep. Jose Serrano (NY). Why would a New York
democrat be proposing overturning the 22cd? My only hope involved
getting Bush out by 08 and if he survives another “accountability
moment” we may all be in big trouble. I told you I'd get there.
Now we got a
possibility that Bush can be re-elected plus our military back home
with no where to go. So the next thing we need is the President under
fire to raise the blood pressure of the Conservatives. I ask you to
look at this statement:
Some
in our country think that Social Security is a trust fund -- in other
words, there's a pile of money being accumulated. That's just simply
not true. The money -- payroll taxes going into the Social Security
are spent. They're spent on benefits and they're spent on government
programs. There is no trust. We're on the ultimate pay-as-you-go
system -- what goes in comes out. And so, starting in 2018, what's
going in -- what's coming out is greater than what's going in. It
says we've got a problem. And we'd better start dealing with it now.
The longer we wait, the harder it is to fix the problem.
President
George Walker Bush
White
House Web Site (2005)
Now compare that to the
Constitution:
United States Constitution Ammendment XIV
Section 4(a).
The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized
by law, including debts incurred for payment of pensions and
bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion, shall
not be questioned.
If the Democrats attempt to use this or
some other issue as grounds for impeachment and actually try to force
Bush out of office we could see the greatest division in this country
since the Civil War and this time we would have the nationalistic
media condemning the reactionary democrats for trying to force a
constitutional crisis at the same time that were at “war”
and being criticized on all fronts.
There is still two more ingredients to
add. The next ingredient will be economic collapse. With the
possibility of an internal constitutional crisis and worldwide
condemnation due to our arrogant foreign policy we will see a run on
dollar followed by economic sanctions which lead to economic
collapse.
The last ingredient would be another
major terrorist attack or possibly just an attempt on the Presidents
life. If this attack can be blamed on reactionary democrats we would
have all the ingredients together.
Now cook this with a round-up of
Muslims (9-11), gays (laser lights wielding terrorists), protestors
(there will be plenty), seditious democrats (that us folks), and
treasonous liberals. Then we have the States remove the 22cd and Bush
becomes president for life.
Are you scared yet? If not see
C.S.
Kendrick's new
Future History series. I in no way
coordinated my scenario with his. I foresee that somehow we won't get
a new election in 2008 without W.
Teacher
Ken brought us this week supporter of the week with
even
conservatives worry about Fascism. The editor of
The American
Conservative, Scott McConnell, in the February 14 piece
states:
I don’t think there
are yet real fascists in the administration, but there is certainly
now a constituency for them —hungry to bomb foreigners and
smash those Americans who might object. And when there are
constituencies, leaders may not be far behind. They could be
propelled into power by a populace ever more frustrated that the
imperialist war it has supported—generally for the most banal
of patriotic reasons—cannot possibly end in victory. And so
scapegoats are sought, and if we can’t bomb Arabs into
submission, or the French, domestic critics of Bush will serve.
I gave him a link to my stuff in the
hopes he will realize that there are already fascists in the
Administration.
These are the main Diaries, with
commentary, from the last few days that relate, in my opinion, to the
possibility that this country is becoming a Corporate Nationalistic
Anti-Communistic State. Historically the Fascist state, which was
Italy under Mussolini, bears remarkable resemblances to the country
many Republican leaders are trying to create. This Diary only covers
Saturday though Tuesday due to the number of listing. If you missed
the previous versions
click
here for them.
Max
Schell wants to remind you that if you
Give
up your liberty once, you lose it forever. A
Feb.
8th article in the Washington Post says that the
proposed Budget not only severely cuts the Transportation Security
Agencies funding but sets up new “Big Brother” programs
within the Department of Homeland Security. I think terrorists would
love to get hold of some fast passes for airport screening stations.
1. Powerful and continuing
expression of nationalism.
Mr.
Sandman used
Tomtech
& the Super Bowl to make it clear that when anyone has a
question about whether something can be considered fascist I have
become the one to ask. I think the whole community needs to be
presented this question. My take on this is that the Super Bowl
pre-game was a show of our nationalism to the worldwide audience who
watched the Super Bowl.
Armstrong
K.B. May be the victim of an isolated
Attack
on academia. I included this here because Armstrong's mother
threatened to cut off his tuition at the University of Colorado if he
defended Ward Churchill. The mother's nationalism exceeded her
dedication to her own son.
2. Disdain for the importance of
human rights.
Thor
Heyerdahl reported how
Torture
comes home - "It's (expletive) over, son." In Campbell
County, Tennessee five law enforcement officers are facing charges of
torturing a convicted drug dealer, in his own home, for two hours.
The guy's girlfriend was able to secretly record 45 minutes of the
incident. Even though this incident is being prosecuted, the fact
that torture is being dismissed as permissable by many will almost
certainly lead to a corresponding increase in torture by those who
think they are somehow justified. These officers appeared to follow
the book which included waterboarding but fell short of causing organ
failure.
Susan
Hu brought us the sickening report of how
Medics
amputated limbs at Abu Ghraib (new, Time mag). The three screen
Report
from Time Magazine details how lack of supplies, medical staff,
and other factors led to a truly systematic level of abuse. This
particular paragraph seemed to tell a different story:
[Dr.
David Auch, commander of the reserve company supporting medical
operations at the prison in 2003,] says neither he nor any members of
his medical staff were consulted about an Iraqi, later dubbed "Ice
Man," when he was first brought to the prison for interrogation
by military intelligence. "They didn't check the detainee
medically when he came in," says Auch. That may have been a
mistake. The man expired under questioning in the middle of the night
in an episode that has been officially ruled a homicide. According to
statements made during an Army inquiry, military personnel ordered
the body put on ice and then spirited it away after medics attached a
fake IV to the dead man's arm in an apparent attempt to create the
impression that he was still alive. Auch, who says he has not been
questioned in the Army investigation, told TIME a medic confided in
him that he was ordered by a military-intelligence officer to
participate in the ruse and never to talk about it.
Maybe
they should have titled the piece “Murder among the abuses
cited by Abu Ghrab Doctor.” This isn't no fraternity prank,
folks.
Susan
Hu also presented the truth about
Outsourcing
Torture: Secret History (FBI v. CIA). This looks at how the
current Administration is ignoring the successful interrogation
technique that have been previously proven effective by the FBI. I
think they actually want the world to know that we use torture in an
attempt to intimidate potential terrorists.
3. Identification of
enemies/scapegoats as a unifying cause.
We found the real problem. C
ls180
brought to our attention the fact that the
Virginia
legislature tries to outlaw underwear. The facts are that on
Tuesday by an overwhelming majority the Legislative branch passed a
Bill intended to make intentionally wearing underwear below the waist
in a method that makes it visible punishable by a $50 fine. I believe
Virginia will be the Democrats example of “see what happens
when you elect too many Republicans.”
4. The supremacy of the
military/avid militarism.
C.
Delia has found the orders that explain why
Commandos
Get Duty on U.S. Soil - JCS Conplan 0300-97. Any regular readers
of Daily Kos diaries or my series should already be aware of the
Pentagon's Strategic Support Branch. The biggest thing added to this
story is the fact that Senior Crusader General William Boykin is
leading this group. The General is best known for referring to the
U.S. Military as the “House of God” and telling Muslins
that “my God is bigger then your god, which is an Idol. If the
man knows so little about Muslims to not know that their God is the
same God that he claims to revere how can we expect him to know
anything.
5. Rampant Sexism.
Egalia
let us know about the
Gay
Hate Fest in TN - Eleven Hate Bills & Counting. Even a safe
Democrat from the most liberal part of the State is joining in on the
fun. It seems like discriminating against the LGBT community has
become the must do thing in the Deep South.
6. A compliant mass media.
Plutonium
Page gave us some insight into
Post-election
Fallujah: What the American media won't tell you. When the spin
masters say that 8,000 people voting in a city that once had 300,000
is a good sign you should know something's wrong. They also said that
accounted for half the vote in the main province of the Sunni
Triangle region. Now will someone explain to me how 16,000 votes,
roughly 7% of registered voters, in an area that was under control
can be considered a positive sign?
B.
Schac cued us into the fact that Britt
Hume
Deliberately Misquoted FDR on Soc. Security. This was taken from
a well presented
Al
Franken Show Blog on Air America's Website that gives the
specific quote by Roosevelt and contrast's that with Hume's
bastardization of said quote. Also others are now quoting Hume to
make the quote more legitimate.
7. Obsession with national security.
Ogre
asked the question;
Are
we all dangers to the public? After his most recent encounter
with airport screeners Ogre described his encounter. This led to a
group of Kossacks relaying their encounters with airport security.
One
reply
from Proud Tinfoil Hat explaining how airport screening are a
used as method to lower our collective resistance to fascistic
security measures caught my attention. BTW if I saw Ogre coming
toward the security kiosk I'd raise the alert level to “Grab
your pitchforks.”
Valabor
gave us an
ALERT:
GOP Bill to Suspend Laws IS MOVING! It seems the Bill that gives
the Homeland Security Department unlimited power to “suspend”
any laws it wants to build in border areas is being rushed through
committee at an unprecedented pace. We need to head this off. This
kink of unlimited power can easily turn ugly.
8. Religion and ruling elite are
tied together.
B.
Prescott let us know about
Inhofe's
Hoaxes. Oklahoma Senator James Inhofe, Chair of the Senate
Committee on Environment and Public Works, said global warming is
"the second largest hoax ever played on the American people,
after the separation of church and state." There you have it;
the worldwide scientific community along with NASA and National
Weather Service has been conspiring in the same way the founding
fathers of this country did to hoodwink the world.
Troutfishing
added the numbers and determined that we are
Slouching
Towards Theocracy: $100 billion for "Faith Based" The
“slouching term came from Bill Berkowitz, in
Slouching
Towards Theocracy at WorkingforChange.com. According to Jim
Towey, director of the White House Office of Faith-Based and
Community Initiatives, no direct federal grants have gone to
non-Christian religious groups. Does anyone doubt that Christianity
is being supported while Government programs are being slashed? From
what I see we are driving at breakneck speeds toward Fascism and the
Theocrats are along for the ride as usual.
Shock
is starting a series on
The
Epistle of Dobson: The 'doctor' flexes his muscles... trips? His
first diary in the series gives background and an overview of a long
letter he received from “Focus on the Family Action”
which is a 501c4 offshoot of Dobson's 501c3 “Focus on the
Family.” The first question for you Lawyer's out there is how
did he get on FotFAI's mailing list? (The main question here
is: did FotF make his address available to
other
organizations too?) And, more importantly is
the fact
that the two organizations shared a single fundraising letter, which
is clearly very political in nature, signed by the founder of both,
appears to be an obvious example of "Improper Coordination"?
Frederick
Clarkson found how the
VA
GOP Attacks Religious Freedom. Even while the Religious Right
praise how the founding fathers set up this Country, the legislators
in Virginia are trying to modify the 220 year old “Statutes of
Religious Freedom. It seems the founding fathers made a mistake by
not specifically allowing religions to proselytize on public land,
which include schools and courthouses.
Del. Charles W.
Carrico Sr. actually said that other nations upheld their
founding religious tenets and
compelled respect for them,
specifically noting the Muslim culture of Arab countries as an
example. When GOP legislators start using Iran as a good example it's
time to get worried.
9. Power of corporations protected.
Gnat
discovered that the
U.S.
Ranks 45th on Environment. The newest rankings of the
Environmental Sustainability Index which rank the U.S 12 nations
below the great environmental pioneers Russia. One quote caught my
eye from the referenced
Berkshire
Eagle Article: The ESI report found a statistical correlation
between high-ranking countries and countries with effective
governments and open political systems. What is the average American
supposed to make of that?
Isn't it nice to know that environmental
action is inversely related to secretive government. Can you guess
which one is increasing?
10. Power of labor suppressed or
eliminated.
11. Disdain for the arts and
Intellectuals.
Nate
Roberts found that a
Colorado
high schooled pull book from class to destroys it. After
complaints from a parental action group the book, Bless Me, Ultima,
which was being used in a literature class, was pulled removed from
the school in order to be destroyed. The group who requested the
books removal was kind enough to offer to purchase all copies of the
book in order to allow the school to recoup some of the financial
loss. The group wanted to
burn the books.
Boppy
let us know that the
Research
and development budget is near a 50 year low. Based on percentage
of the GDP this Budget is the worst in many a year for science and
research. How can we lead the World if we fall behind? I keep
forgetting the military budget greatly outpaces the rest of the
World. I guess we can still lead, with our guns pointed at the rest
of the world.
ExUrban
Mom reminded us by
Calling
OH Kossacks: OH SB 24 Must Be Stopped! This is that Owellian
named “Academic Bill of Rights” that is designed to make
Professors present opposing views and requires Institutions to hire
more Republicans plus much more. I only see one good thing out of
this; the Schools will have to provide major pay raises to professors
to attract money hungry conservatives.
Pacified
informed us that there are
Right
Wing Pundits Jealous of Daily Kos. While that in itself is good
news the term “hyper-intellectual” being used as a slur
is cause for alarm. Personally being an unemployed blue collar
Engineering Technician I feel proud to have the respect of you
Hyper-Intellectuals.
Unstable
Isotope showed us a case study in
Wingnut
science: Breast implants are good for you? It seems that Senator
Colbern from OK actually said that “
silicone breast
implants. If you have them, you're healthier.” I think
this is part of a ploy to prove that, if even elected Senators can be
clueless about scientists, other scientists must be clueless also.
12. Obsession with crime and
punishment.
13. Rampant cronyism and corruption.
On Monday
Virginia
Dem presented
Today's
spreadable GOP factoid: Memo-theft-gate. This is where the Senate
Master at Arms has evidence that Republican Staffers stole classified
data from the Senate Democrats computers and not only released some
to the press but used this information to undercut Democratic
initiatives in Congress. Just wait and see how many people take the
fall for this. My guess is two at the most. It seems that the
Republicans are trying to justify this illegal theft by saying; 1) we
didn't hack into their systems; and 2) just look at what we caught
them planning. The first excuse is just saying “it's not our
fault the system wasn't secure enough” and the second one is
just a standard Rovian tactic of “don't look at the terrible
crime I did, see what they were doing.”
14. Fraudulent elections.
J.
Brinker, who has personal knowledge of the case, reported that
Surprise,
surprise, Republican Voter Fraud in Wisconsin. It appears that
the former President of the College Republicans returned to Wisconsin
from his new home in Illinois to vote since Wisconsin was a swing
state. This is the first case of election fraud to face prosecution
from the 2004 election. The newspaper article failed to mention that
he was a Republican but did mention that he was in “Student
Government.” I hope to see many more cases.
Raul
V.B. Wanted to know
Who
the real winner was on November 2nd? He did some research and
came up with a list of over 800,000 questionable votes that would
have turned at least Ohio and New Mexico over to Kerry. I hope they
keep at this even though it is too late. It's not too late to do
something useful.
F.
Furney was the first to post about a Maryland Governor
Ehrlich
Lackey Caught Smearing O'Malley on Free Republic. Joseph Steffen,
a longtime aide to the Maryland Governor has been implicated in the
posting of derogatory lies about Baltimore Mayor Martin O'Malley. The
aide resigned and took all the blame. It looks like the Republicans
have found a use for their Netroots.
BooMan23
let us know that
Christopher
Hitchens thinks the OHIO VOTE WAS STOLEN. In the latest Vanity
Fair there is an editorial on voter fraud in Ohio and how the
election may have been stolen. I didn't take the time to read the
whole thing, sorry.
15. Class Warfare.
No
Alternative added a new diary Sunday about the
Tenn.
Gov. lying about dropping children from Tenncare. They are also
forcing Attorney Gordon Bonnyman, who has been an advocate for those
on TennCare, to give up representing everyone in the system so he can
represent just those who may lose coverage. Now it's a conflict of
interest to support those who will continue to receive benefits and
those who may lose benefits.
Columbus
Lee discovered the truth behind
Compassionate
Conservatives in Ohio. It seems these compassionates want to cut
the poor of Medicaid while cutting taxes on the highest income
earners and adding a half cent sales tax which is felt mostly by
consumers. I'm glad to know how compassionate they are towards those
whose main needs are more money and power.
Egrass
added to the budget cuts argument with the excellent point that
Bush
Cuts are Deeper Than Reported Due To Population Growth - GET THE WORD
OUT. When we are working on the numbers in the Budget we also
need to factor in increased needs along side of the normally
accounted for inflation adjustments.
ISUDEM
tacked on
The
true face of "compassionate conservatism" which is an
initial look at the scope of the Budget Cuts.
Volvo
Liberal found the specifics on
Chimp's
New Budget Plan: White House Declares War on Americans. With the
majority of cuts targeting progressive programs it's apparent what
the newest targets are. It's the neediest Americans.
Silencing Dissent [new section]
Septic
Tank discovered
Feingold's
folly: McCain's S.271 would curb 527s. Senators McCain and Lott
have decided to reign in the power of 527 since it actually gave a
voice to those whose candidates were afraid to speak out. Sen.
Feingold is also supporting this Legislation. We can't have effective
voices that aren't controlled by political operatives or corporate
media can we.
Rakkasan
informed us that He
was
escorted from a pro-republican townhall meeting. During a “Town
Hall” meeting with a State Senator he asked a state senator why
good Christian conservatives should continue to vote for Republicans.
After having an opportunity to expand on his question; two men
escorted him from the meeting for “disturbing the peace and
trying to incite a riot.” It is apparent that speaking freely,
fairly, and factually to Republicans is inciting riot. I guess the
were trying to protect him by making sure the Republicans didn't tar
and feather him before riding him out of town on a rail.
Dave
Weigel was first with the fact that the
GOP
aims at 'Daschlizing' Harry Reid. Bring em on! Reid just won
re-election and doesn't have to face the voters for another 6 years.
Let them spend their supporters most important political capitol;
money. From
Born-a-Dem's
diary advocating
Give
'em hell, Harry it looks like Sen. Reid agrees with me.
Dave
added
Your
daily 'Harry Reid is a badass' update on Wednesday after Reid had
dinner and a private meeting with the President. Reid said "I'm
beginning to think that those statements are just absolutely false,"
referring to Bush's state of the union comments about reaching out
and being a uniter. I'm sure the Presidents hopes to reach out and
pull Democrats to the right.
Lapin
brought forth the question: is
Bush
Using BPA to Punish NW Blue States? After reading this and a
listening to Amy Goodman state that the Budget is cutting funds
primarily to the Northeast, Northwest, and urban areas. It is
beginning to look like we are being punished for not voting for Bush.
With the House firmly in Republican control and the possibility of
the Senate abandoning the Filibuster we will soon see more
retribution specifically aimed at primarily democratic voters. This
is a modern example of silencing dissenters. Cutting funds to secular
human services and increasing “faith based” funding is
another example of promoting groups that will spread Republican dogma
while reducing the effectiveness of groups that promote true
Democratic Values.
Katie
Bird let us know that she is
OUTRAGED!
Bush continues to deny citizens the right to see him. She spoke
out in agreement with an
editorial
from
Buzzflash about last
weeks Fargo incident. I am sick and tired of this kind of thing
continuing and that's why I added this section today.
Pure Propaganda
Greg
Turner found that the
Heritage
Foundation posts fuzzy math. These “Conservative
Institutions” are just a way to legitimize Right Wing
propaganda. This time they are putting up a Soc. Sec. Calculator
specifically designed to show how great privatization is. Greg's
researched turned up the fact that this calculator assumes a 4.95%
increase per year in the Market while presenting that social security
would grow at 0.2%. The CBO analysis which shows Soc. Sec. will run
out in 2052 only assumes a growth rate of less then 1%. If the Market
increased by even 3% a year this country would be in have greatest
economy ever seen and Soc. Sec. would be solvent as long as the
growth rate continued.
Steve
the Weave actually broke the story of the
911
Report -- Condi Lied: Planes for Suicide Missions. But
Thinking
Republican got all the attention in
Bush
Covered Up 9/11 Report of Warnings. The “confidential”
section of the 9-11 report is starting to see the light of day and
the
NY
Times has obtained a “heavily redacted” version. His
report is just another example where Administration Security is mixed
up with National Security. Oh yea, Condi Lied but that's not news to
anyone in the “Reality Based Community.”
There is hope! Here are some
articles on a way to fight back.
This section is devoted to those who
have done something and are sharing their stories, those who have
suggestions for ways to be active, and those who cry out for
immediate action. I do what little I can. I am becoming active in my
local blue county in the biggest red state. I plan to do as much as I
can when called upon. I'm sure I missed many of these Diaries this
week so my apologies to all.
Cheers to

Simon
Moon wants us to sign the
