On December 1, my health insurance will cost $7557.96 a year

This is going to be a simple and straightforward diary. Nothing fancy, just bleak information most Americans will certainly relate to.

These are the facts.

Fact: It's very scary being a citizen of the United States when you have to deal with realities like these.

Fact: I received my health insurance premium renewal notice today. As of December 1, it's going up 13%.

Fact: It had been $558.48 a month. It's going to $629.83.

Fact: This is $7557.96 a year.  This doesn't include a $500 deductible if I go outside the PPO.

So if I go to doctors ouside the preferred provider organization (PPO), I'm in for $8057.96, before I get a nickle from the insurance company.

Then, if I'm lucky, they pay 80% of what is called the usual and customary charge.

Do you all know how the usual and customary scam operates? For those of you who don't, let me explain. Say you go to a doctor and he charges $200.00 for a 6 minute visit. You submit the bill to the insurance company thinking well, I've met my $500.00 deductible, at least I'll get reimbursed 80% of $200.00, $160.00. Not so quick, amigo.

The insurance company pays you 80% of what it deems the reasonable and customary charge. So if they believe the UCC is $120.00, you'll receive a magnanimous $96.00.

I know I'm a very privileged American. I'm insured, I should just shut up, but I can't because I'm deeply worried, as I know all of you are, about our collective future. The enormous financial burden of healthcare has worn me out, I'm running on fumes and I'm one of the lucky ones.  I can only imagine the rage of most Americans.

I'm also beside myself with anger that I'm expected to pay 13% more for the privilege of fighting to access basic healthcare which should be a right of citizenship. There's a serious malignancy deep in our national psyche--a  malignancy which may be uncurable. Too many Americans, including Mr. Bush, believe that healthcare is not a right. This is depraved thinking. The challenge for the next Democratic president will be to explain to the American people why every American is entitled to the basic healthcare the rest of the civilized world takes for granted.

I'll leave you with this sad story.

I recently had to have a medical procedure. The minute I walked in the door, the receptionist threw a piece of paper in my face and barked, "Sign here! This states if your insurance doesn't pay, you're responsible."  The denials of treatment, tests and medical care has become so routine, that despite paying these outrageous premiums, we know, as do health care providers, that we are all totally at the mercy of the out-of-control and lawless health insurance industry.

And yes, I know many of you are uninsured. I honor your bravery, courage, and determination in the face of terrible hardship every single day.
