I was pretty open to accepting Arlen Specter as a Democratic Senator from Pennsylvania, as evidenced by the diaries I wrote in prospective-support of him.(1, 2) However, it is now clear that Arlen Specter hasn't figured out that he's a Democrat. Do I want someone to follow in lock-step? No, but I don't want such a moron as part of the Democratic Senate caucus.
Arlen Specter can go (bleep) himself after this, and prepare to be shocked at such a display of stupidity.
"There's still time for the Minnesota courts to do justice and declare Norm Coleman the winner."
To add insult to injury;
If he regrets his tough questioning of Anita Hill:
"No. When a serious charge is made like sexual harassment, the subject is entitled to question the accuser and find out the facts...."
The interview will appear in the New York Times magazine in the near future. I have nothing else to add other than this; I may support Rep. Sestak in 2010, despite my initial skepticism about him.
Update:
For those skeptical about Halperin's source, The Huffington Post confirms it. The interview should be published this weekend.
Some also are looking for the context of the actual question he was asked, and using the question to put Specter's answer "into context". The question was regarding Specter's thoughts that after his defection, there are no longer any Jewish Republicans in the U.S. Senate(in fact, the only Jewish Republican left in Congress is Rep. Cantor of Virginia).
Per the Washington Examiner;
Question: With your departure from the Republican Party, there are no more Jewish Republicans in the Senate. Do you care about that?
Specter: I sure do. There’s still time for the Minnesota courts to do justice and declare Norm Coleman the winner.
If Specter left it at "I sure do", that would have been absolutely fine. However, without being prompted, he brought up Norm Coleman. Context my (bleep).
