Here at Top Comments we strive to recognize and promote the talent of this community by highlighting outstanding comments found throughout the day by the diarist, and more importantly through nominations sent to Top Comments at gmail dot com by your fellow Kossacks. When you send in your picks, please include your username and a word or two about why you nominated the comment, and send them in by 6:30 pm Pacific/9:30 pm Eastern to ensure they make the final diary.
The very first Earth Day was held on April 22, 1970. Only observed in the US at that time, it has since come to be a worldwide phenomenon celebrated by more than 175 countries. It is now coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network.
The Earth Day Network site has many clickable links including a long list of Earth Day events here. There are literally dozens in a variety of locales. The Network offers a place where individual acts of green can be pledged here. Here is a list of suggested activities for teachers. I like the idea of students playing environmental jeopardy.
Here at casa boran we try to be green. To that end, we attempt, not always successfully, to grow some of our own vegetables each year. We figure that it's both better for us and the environment. It's the ultimate in eating local. In furtherance of this year's crop, we've now begun indoor composting. Our recently acquired ceramic container, with charcoal filter under the lid, is seen directly below. Although we haven't made an official Network pledge, I will continue to encourage the boran2 boy to throw appropriate scraps in the bin.
This will hopefully prove useful for the tomatoes (and whatever else we grow) we usually plant in pots on our small deck. Last summer's crop was considerably less than bumper, even with the organic worm poop fertilizer that we used. Perhaps compost will improve things.
Our prior attempts at composting have met with mixed success, mostly because the temperatures in the pile aren't sufficiently warm as best as I can figure. Having the container inside will hopefully solve that problem.
Here's more on indoor composting.
Will you be doing anything green?
On to the nominations:
From JG in MD:
In a fine rant by Colorado is the Shiznit, jm214 sums up the
situation and challenges us to fight back.
From Cedwyn:
I almost snerfed coffee from this diary.
From Puddytat:
Short but sweet truism from the front page story GOP faces hostility at home over Medicare cuts; Senate Dems... rush to provide cover? This would be my wish, as well as that of the commenter, rontun.
From Land of Enchantment:
I'm betting jbou's wishing he thought of this bit of off-color snark from davybaby, considering former NM Gov. Gary Johnson's chances at getting elected Republican/Libertarian President.
