Warning: Weird Pre-Halloween Post Ahead! Come on in and see if you can identify a few of my little friends.
Since childhood I've been fascinated with bony anatomy, and since we're nearing Halloween it seemed like the least alarming time to share my fascination with skulls, a collection of which is spread throughout our house.
I've found, cleaned, and displayed skulls and bones from our property including those of fox, possum, raccoon, deer, hawk, cat, dog and owl (Disclaimer: No animals have ever been harmed in collecting these items; all met their natural fate on their way to my bookcase and hutch shelves).
A visitor once recoiled, saying, "Oh, you like dead things," but to me they are beautiful and intricate sculptures of life itself.
While I've never visited the Capuchin Crypts of Italy, I'm sure I'd feel right at home there.
Described by Frommer's as "one of the most horrifying images in all of Christendom", large numbers of the bones are nailed to the walls in intricate patterns, many are piled high among countless others, while others hang from the ceiling as light fixtures.
Follow me below the orange gnocchi-doodle for more fabulous Bones from Rome, as well as some (non-human) ones from my own collection.
BUT FIRST: A Word From Our Sponsor:
Here at Top Comments we strive to nourish community by rounding up some of the site's best, funniest, most mojo'd and most informative commentary. We depend on your help with talent spotting. If you see a comment by another Kossack that deserves wider recognition, please send it to topcomments at gmailby 9:30pm Eastern. Please please please include a few words about why you sent it in as well as your user name (even if you think we know it already :-)), so we can credit you with the find!
Italy's Capuchin Crypt,, underneath the Santa Maria della Immacolata Concezione church and dating back to 1631, contains five small chapels that are artfully filled and decorated with the bones of some 4,000 monks who chose to be be interred there because the soil had originally been brought from Jerusalem.
A placard in five languages reads:
What you are now we used to be;
what we are now you will be.
While my own collection of (non-human) skulls and bones is nowhere near as extensive, it is often considered equally macabre by unwitting visitors. My love of bony anatomy led to a life-long series of medical careers, including 15 years in X-ray, and along the way I've developed a knack for finding these treasures wherever I roam.
Early on, mrcreek (paradise50) wistfully wondered why that nice hutch my grandfather built couldn't hold things normal people displayed, but he's since come to understand and even appreciate my odd little hobby.
You can imagine my delight when bony mojo was implemented!
See how many critters you can identify from this collection: (Answers in the comments)
Can you can guess what these are? Hint: I found these strewn all over the beach in Mazatlan Mexico, after a storm. They are not vertebrae.
And Now, it's Time for Today's Top Cmments!
It seems as if in tonight's Top Comments we are finally aiming our wrath where it is deserved:
from Wee Mama:
The broader import of Ghaddafy's death is made clear in this comment summarizing all the ways he supported terrorism.
and moneywrangler gave this succinct and must-see statement of Republican goals in weatherdude's diary Hey Republicans? Screw Off.
from Pandora's Box:
here4tehbeer is just too funny on Herman Cain's contortions in Kaili Joy Gray's diary Herman Cain is pro-choice (he just doesn't know it)
from Angie inWAState:
This bumpersticker comment by Statusquomustgo in Something the Dog Said's diary Time to Make Republicans Own Their Economic Sabotage Agenda has to be seen as well as read, because, I want to see that bumper sticker on 20 million cars before the end of this year! (Editor's note: I agree, Angie-- here it is, and I've also stolen it for my sig!)
From Dragon5616:
You didn't have to go anywhere but JanF's J Town: Got Post? to find back-to-back Top Comments. First, tonight's TC diarist poster shamelessly stole Andrew Sullivan's words. Then laserhaas posted an awesome photo mini-diary.
from JanF:
A bubbanomics sighting, in which he has his own Romneyesque list of things you can't do if you are running for office
And from your bony poster, smileycreek:
vipersdad astutely points out that the Republican debates have been highly orchestrated with extremist non-candidates to make the ultimate nominee look more centrist. Only he says it better, so go read it.
And Now, a Little Top Mojo!
