You may have heared about the Michigan Teacher (Brooke Harris) who was suspended and then fired (for insubordination when she argued the suspension was unfair) for speaking to her students on the Trayvon Martin case and arranging a fund raiser for Trayvon. There's also some Diary's here on DailyKos - including this one by Kossack "Vyan" who posted "Mich Teacher Fired for Organizing Support for Trayvon". You may even know (and find it ironic) that the school being abusive is called the "Pontiac Charter School for Excellence" and/ or heard about the Michigan hacked Highway electronic road sign that made a very public racial slur/ slam on Trayvon
Have you heard about the lame excuses by Superintendent Jacqueline Cassell
- who stated that;
Cassell, who was not present at the event, has told the media that she is a "child of the 1960s" and understands the parallels of the civil rights movement of yesteryear and efforts today.
MLive via AP: "I'm a child of the civil rights movement," the superintendent said. She said she has supported the work of the Southern Poverty Law Center in the past but said "this is not the time in the school year" for efforts that distract from academics.
Support for Brooke Harris Grows
Did you Know that the teacher, Brooke Harris, was studying to be a doctor and changed her major after taking a course that placed students one-on-one with homeless youth(s) in Washtenaw County.
Are you aware that the reason Brooke Harris was suspended - twice - and then fired; is because her Prinicipal approved her holding a fundraiser for her "Journalism" students and the Superintendent nixed the idea? (The Superintendent classified Brooke Harris's efforts as Insubordination - when she tried to defend herself against the tyranny) (See details from MLive - All Michigan [here]).
Please Sign the Petition asking Michigan schools to Re-instate Brooke Harris?The Petition was at 57,000 signatures and is now zooming to 200,000.
This is a local Television story on the whole affair.
as the title to the Diary states, support for Brooke Harris is growing. As people are taking up her cause. A Rally was held Tuesday at Pastor Williams' church -King Solomon Baptist Church. A place noteworthy with rich history - as both Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. once spoke there. The Rally had 200 people, like Mertilla Jones, whose 6 yr old granddaughter was killed by Detroit police. Many took exception to the remarks by Superintendent Cassell - that state she was a student of the 60's. As remarked by Ron Scott, denoted in the MLive article (here) it specifiesku that;
Ron Scott of the Detroit Coalition Against Police Brutality took exception to that statement. "If she was a child of the '60s, she evidently forgot everything that she knew," he told the crowd.Pastor Williams has gone on the record stating that - if Brooke Harris is not back on her by this Friday - they will be protesting at the Excellence Academy on Monday.
And we will be posting about this just cause - thru - its conclusion.
The Rally was also a fundraiser and Brooke Harris wore a blazer and a Hoody.
