Dharun Ravi
That's what the Twitter is saying.
As we've previously discussed, the jury had returned a mixed verdict in this case, regarding Ravi's spying on his Rutgers roommate Tyler Clementi in the days leading to his suicide. Ravi had been convicted of various counts regarding the invasion of Clementi's privacy and the foreseeable intimidating aspects thereof, as well as counts relating to the attempted evidence and witness tampering -- deleting tweets and trying to coordinate stories with Molly Wei.
It was assumed that Ravi had avoided a plea deal which would have resulted in no jail time, but heavy community service, because of the risk of deportation stemming from any felony conviction. I'm unclear where that now stands.
More when I learn it.
9:51 AM PT: Ravi faced up to 10 years in prison. With good behavior, he may end up serving two weeks.
According to Elie Mystal of Above the Law, Judge Berman was persuaded to recommend that Ravi not be deported based on the victim statement filed by M.B., Clementi's partner, who urged the Court to sentence Ravi to “some type of confinement” to think about what he’s done, but that he didn't deserve to be deported.
9:53 AM PT: Full sentence is 30 days in prison, 3 years probation, 300 hours community service, $12,000 in fines.
