Martin O'Malley
Gov. Martin O'Malley
Tomorrow, Saturday, July 14, at 4 PM ET/1 PM PT, we will be hosting Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley, a rising star in national Democratic politics, in a first at Daily Kos—a Google Plus Hangout. Join Meteor Blades and me tomorrow in our live video chat with the governor.

But before you do, tell us what questions you'd like to ask Gov. O'Malley. Maybe you'd like to hear more about his theory for why Mitt Romney was passed over for John McCain's pick for vice president. (Thanks, LaurenMonica, great diary!)

He's coming to us from the annual meeting of the Democratic National Governors Association, so he'll be able to give us an idea of what he's hearing about from his fellow governors, what issues are particularly critical for the states.

Let us know what you'd like Meteor Blades and me to ask him about, and join us tomorrow afternoon, 4 PM ET/1 PM PT, to hear his answers.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

the heavy-handed police tactics used on peaceful protesters last year, and evidenced here again in Los Angeles just yesterday.
So many of us are simply outraged at the growing inequality in our Nation (the rapidly shrinking Middle Class), and are so very frustrated that government is becoming increasingly ineffective in helping the American People maintain our standard of living.
Thus the protests, which speak for so many of us.

And if I got one more question it'd be about the expansion/improvement of the ACA to include a Public Option (or to lower the Medicare eligibility age to 50 or 55) as a means to bring down health care costs and improve quality of care for average Americans.

Maryland's FOIA and open meetings laws are very weak.

While the governors office publishes it's "statestat" online, these are summary reports, and they are not what the question is about.

State agencies have the reputation of being generally hostile to document requests, and access to databases and other electronic documents is both difficult and expensive.

State agencies routinely keep their meeting minutes offline, on paper, making public access difficult.

Your MD Transportation Authority, whose members you appoint, has been caught violating even the simplest requirements of the open meetings act again and again.

  •  As a Baltimore City teacher, 2003... (0+ / 0-)

I would like him to address the realities of cities when they are orphaned by their state governments. When Baltimore City Schools had a severe economic crisis -- due largely, yes, to corruption and incompetence at the top of the city Education administration and a reluctance to shine a light on the abuse -- Bob Ehrlich, the Republican governor, refused to help the city in any way, because O'Malley was the mayor and widely believed to be a future challenger.

In essence, Ehrlich would sacrifice the city's students and teachers, if not the city itself, to win a political point. Since Governor O'Malley has seen that first hand, perhaps he could speak to how the TEA Party and Republican legislators have been behaving.

Does Gov. O'Malley agree with what Paul Krugman said about Ireland?

“Ireland is Romney economics in practice. They’ve laid off a large fraction of their public workforce, they’ve slashed spending, they’ve had extreme austerity programs,” Krugman said on “The Colbert Report” on Monday night, promoting his book, “End This Depression Now.”

“They have 14 percent unemployment, 30 percent youth unemployment, zero economic growth. Ireland is a demonstration - Ireland is America’s future if Romney becomes president,” Krugman added.

Since all politics is local - could you please ask O'Malley how he can help us get rid of our current Mayor Stephanis Rawlings Blake (SRB).  On top of the fact that she has driven one of the best Police Commisioner we have had out of office (see the article on Inside Maryland Politics) and driven several other very competent people out of City Government with what appears to be her clique of friends - according to the Baltimore Sun's article today - she is trying to shut down dissent within the Police and Fire department by setting up a policy on social media (aka, the say no evil about your employer policy for police and firemen).  Apparently she does not like the fact that the Fire and Police departments are airing some of their concerns about leadership in a forum where the public can read it.

Please - if O'Malley still cares about the city that launched his political carreer - ask him is he has any dirt on SRB - we need his help.

  •  PEPCO is O'Malley's Achilles heel. (0+ / 0-)

The Maryland government -- and especially its Public Service Commission -- has always treated electric utility PEPCO gently, despite its miserable record in serving the public.  One wonders how much this has to do with the campaign contributions PEPCO has made to Maryland politicians.  One also wonders how much this has to do with O'Malley's brother-in-law Joe Curran, formerly a member of the Commission, and now a lobbyist for Maryland utility companies.
