Public Transportation
Getting to Vallejo from the City is done one of two ways. There is the ferry and accompanying bus lines that run from the Ferry Building. Plan an hour but a very very pleasant ride.
There is BART to El Cerrito Del Norte station and a bus that runs every twenty minutes to Vallejo which is about an additional 15 minute ride.
For people relying on public transportation to get to the campus, Brian and I could certainly meet people and drive them to campus and take them back to the terminal.
There should be enough drivers going who can stop by any of the terminals and pick people up.
Other options are to take BART to stations near drivers' homes where you can be picked up.
It is noted if you don't have a car, we'll get you there. Tell us in the comments what your needs are.
The event is being catered and navajo and I will be splitting the cost. If you want to bring some beer or wine to share, that would be lovely but not necessary to attend.
A little bit about our campus from our website.
The California Maritime Academy is a unique campus of the California State University preparing students for successful careers in the fast-paced and exciting fields of international business &logistics, marine engineering technology, global studies & maritime affairs, marine transportation, mechanical engineering, and facilities engineering technology.
Cal Maritime is located on a compact but scenic waterfront campus in Vallejo, 30 miles northeast of San Francisco. With about 850 students, class sizes are small and students, faculty and staff know each other by name. A key part of the campus experience is the annual training cruise aboard our 500-foot Training Ship GOLDEN BEAR. She serves as a floating classroom/laboratory where classroom concepts in marine transportation, engineering and technology are practiced and applied. School-sponsored, study-abroad trips provide those studying international business, logistics, maritime security and maritime policy with a first-hand exposure to those practices in locations around the world.
It's a fascinating place to work. My colleagues are some of the most dedicated in the maritime industry and completely focused on preparing our students for a life working with the sea. I am proud of what we do and can't wait to show it off.
As noted above, we will be conducting a tour of the Golden Bear. Keep in mind this is a functioning ship. There is no crustacean bar or shuffle board. The passageways can be quite narrow and the stairs between decks steep. No open toed shoes or high heels are permitted. We are sorry but no children under the age of 5 can board the ship. You will be required to present photo identification to board the vessel.
We will also be conducting a tour of the ship simulator. This is an amazing experience.
In 2008, the California Maritime Academy announced the opening of its new Simulation Training Facility, one of the most advanced in the world. With two 360-degree projection systems and numerous smaller simulators that can interlink, an oil spill trajectory simulator, a liquid/gas cargo handling simulator, and a crisis management center, the facility creates a strikingly realistic environment for training, research, accident investigation, and crisis management with the ultimate goal of safer navigation, and the preservation of life and the environment.
While simulation mirrors the realities at sea, the new simulation facility comes as close as possible to creating a real life maritime world where visual, practical learning tactics can help transform knowledge into advanced professional leadership skills. All the bridge simulators are capable of acting as separate, stand-alone vessels in a training exercise, each with visual views of the others and capable of communicating and interacting virtually with one another. This technology is a total shift in maritime training techniques of the past. With interactive bridges, multiple constituents can participate in the training, each focusing on their specific roles while working together. Additionally, the hardware used provides the capability of emulating many different propulsion systems.
I'll warn you here that the experience is very realistic. I've asked our operator not to get us rolling too strongly, but for those of you who get seasick easily this may test your gizzard.

Your diarist Steveningen regrets that I didn't submit anything today. Had a damned headache most of the day and didn't play on the orange very much.
