In the last few days some wonderful pics have shown up on facebook to educate us silly liberals on just how silly we are.  Here is one I saw last night:

You see if we are going to talk about gun control, limiting the amount of rounds in a legal clip, or even an assault weapons ban, we need to talk about rocks too.

Because it's all equivalent

Sigh.

What do you suppose is that weight of that rock that person is holding in their hand?

How easy (and fast) is it for an average human to transport a bag of 100 rocks of that size and weight, unaided, with just their own backs, arms and legs, 100 yards?  Okay 50 yards?  30 yards?

How many of those rocks, being that size and weight can an average human arm, unaided, throw in 90 seconds?

What is the range of that unaided human arm throwing rocks of that size and weight?

At a distance of 10 feet, can a rock that size and that weight , thrown unaided by the average human arm, put a hole clean through another person's mid section?

Can a rock that size and that weight , thrown unaided by the average human arm at a distance of over 10 feet go right through one piece of dry wall, through sound proof batting, through another piece of dry wall and still wound someone sitting on the other side?

Can an average unaided human arm throw enough rocks of that size and weight fast enough, in a fanning motion, to create anything resembling "supressive fire?"

Will the 30th rock that size and weight being thrown by the average unaided human arm in 90 seconds, go the same distance as the 1st rock?

Can an average person, carrying a bag of 100 rocks, throwing them unaided with an unaided arm kill 12 people and injure 58 in a crowded theater in 90 seconds?

Well a sling is something that requires  finesse and practice, something that an AR15 does not require.  But a slingshot on the other hand. . .

It would make the load of 100 rocks smaller and lighter, and greatly assists the unaided human arm - giving the projectile more speed, more inertia = more damage.

How easy (and fast) is it for an average human to transport a bag of 100 slingshot sized rocks, unaided, with just their own backs, arms and legs, 100 yards? 50 yards?  30 yards?

How many of those slingshot sized rocks, can an average human arm, using a slingshot, unleash in 90 seconds?

What is the range of that human arm with aid of a slingshot unleashing slingshot sized rocks?

At a distance of 20 feet, can a slingshot sized rocks, unleashed by the average human arm with slingshot, put a hole clean through another person's mid section?

Can a slingshot sized rock, unleashed average human arm aided by a slingshot at a distance of over 20 feet go right through one piece of dry wall, through sound proof batting, through another piece of dry wall and still wound someone sitting on the other side?

Can an average human arm aided with a slingshot unleash enough slingshot sized rocks fast enough, in a fanning motion, to create anything resembling "supressive fire?"

Will the 30th slingshot sized rocks unleashed the average unaided human arm with a slingshot, in 90 seconds, go the same distance as the 1st rock?

Can an average person, carrying a bag of 100 slingshot sized rocks, unleashing them with and average human arm  with only the aid of a slingshot, kill 12 people and injure 58 in a crowded theater in 90 seconds?

Oh and one more thing:

Slingshots are illegal in many states (CA, MA, RI, NJ, etc. ) and many municipalities (Salt Lake City, UT; Charleston, SC; Dearborn, MI; St. Louis, MO; the City and County of Denver, etc.)

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

You can add a private note to this diary when hotlisting it:

Pure idiocy. And before the "car" meme comes up, have you ever been to an indoor theater where you could POSSIBLY drive a car into the seating area and still navigate well enough to kill/maim many dozens of people in 90 seconds?

• ##### Last week, they compared cars to guns(4+ / 0-)

I got into it last week when a friend of mine used an even more specious argument that said cars are the same as guns since they both kill people. Then again, so do crack and heroin but those are both illegal.

The primary purpose of an automobile is to transport people and not to kill them. Ovens are primarily used to cook food but occasionally someone will try (sometimes successfully) to kill themselves by sticking their head in an oven. Do we ban ovens?

Here's another one (albeit somewhat graphic): some people have killed themselves accidently via auto-eroticsm, but we haven't banned self-pleasure (don't give Teavangelicals any ideas) or the sale of belts, robes, ties, etc.

The rock analogy is almost as stupid as the guns don't kill people, bullets do meme. Oh really, then why does the coroner's report on cause of death list GSW (gunshot wound)?

No registration to own a car.
No license to own a car.
No waiting period to buy a car.
No age limit to buy a car.
No reciprocity BS between states INRE licenses.
No limit on what you can own (Porsche/Ferrari [full auto/AOWs] vs Tacoma/Jeep [handguns/semi-auto/bolt/etc.])

With two requirements:
Registration for gun owners (not sure where your idea of no registration comes from, but you may notice cars have license plates)

Prison terms for gun owners and the sellers if the gun kills someone.

• ##### talk about narrow exceptions(0+ / 0-)

1) Liability insurance mandatory
2) registration required (unless possibly kept in a place where use in a public space is not possible, e,g, locked in a gun club safe)
3) Demonstration of responsbility and capacity, including periodic background checks
4) strict liability for harms (just as one has with shipping gasoline or any other dangerous material)

(i'd note that the responsible gun owner would have no trouble meeting these requirements, so resistence to them is effectively advocating putting weapons in the hands of the irresponsible)

I'm going to wryly observe that my suspicion is that when it comes to brass tacks, we're pretty close in our actual policy positions, sound and fury signifying nothing!

Your statement about responsible gun owners rings like "If you have nothing to hide, why do we need a warrant? Why won't you answer our questions?"

Narrow exceptions? I have ONE firearm I use on public property. That's the one I carry on me. The rest of them I use on a private range or on other private property.

Some expansion of above:

2. Registration has led to confiscation before. You will also see a HUGE chunk of noncompliance when it comes to this. Look at Canada and their long arm registry.
3. We don't have licenses to exercise our civil rights and we shouldn't.
4. I say no, but I'd like to hear exactly what you mean. If you mean I shoot someone and I'm liable for it, sure. If you mean, someone steals the firearm from me and I'm liable for what they do with it, hell no.

• ##### Yes(0+ / 0-)

if your gun is used to shoot someone, then pony up for the damage.  It's a very old principle of common law.

But at least we are clear that you are standing up for the rights of thugs and mentally ill people everywhere to engage in mayhem.

If someone steals my car and runs you over, should I be held responsible for that?

And your specious reasoning for my support of thugs and mentally ill people causing mayhem is ridiculous.

• ##### NOt really(0+ / 0-)

You oppose the regulations taht could reduce harms in order to avoid being inconvenienced by paperwork.  Thus, you seem to value your own inconvenience more highly than the lives that are lost as the result of a complete lack of controls.  In particular, the lack of controls operate mostly to the benefit of people who would fail background checks or who do not know how to handle a gun responsibly.

Simply logic.

And I oppose regulations that will mean Democrats can't get elected dogcatcher. You honestly think pushing (and failing to pass) legislation that isn't going to help with firearm related crime is worth the loss of numerous Democrats?

e.g. it is legal to own any car you wish to purchase but it is ILLEGAL to drive drunk and turn that car into a potential WEAPON OF MASS DESTRUCTION. further, implementation of 'regulations' did not result in the government 'coming to take our cars!' in other words, your right to own a car is upheld but laws are in place in order to promote public safety.

similarly, you can buy and smoke any number of cigarettes you want but there are laws in place to prevent you from smoking them in public places in order to promote public safety.

the same regulations and laws should be apply to gun ownership. owning guns is fine, but we should be regulating WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION, because that is what arsenals of assault rifles and ammunition are.

• ##### Assault rifles have been regulated since the 30s. (0+ / 0-)

If you want to redefine WMD to mean small arms...well, have fun.

It is illegal to shoot people (with certain extenuating circumstances, like self defense, LEO, soldier, etc).

It is illegal to maim someone (with the same extenuating circumstances).

I'm all for laws that don't do that whole 'prior restraint' thing.

The Bible does not say Cain used a rock.  Later rabbinic interpretation sometimes made that assumption.  The story in Genesis 4 leaves this entirely up to the imagination of the reader, along with many other things.  One could just as easily imagine strangulation.  Then the poster would have to be about making everybody's hands illegal and cutting them off.
