New Dan Banner
Every day is a new day and with that, a new opportunity.
EVERYONE is welcome and please join us each morning at 7:30 AM PACIFIC
to tell us what you're working on, share your show & tell, vent, whatever you want...
...this is an open thread. Nothing is off topic.

Win or lose, I love Presidential election cycles and even love the choreographed pageantry and (occasionally) unexpected drama of the conventions.

But there's one convention moment I'll never forget (and no, it wasn't "The Kiss" by Al and Tipper Gore).  It was at the Republican convention in 2008, the night SHE took the stage.

Palin 2008 convention

Remember that little sneer?

I started listening to her speech in the spirit of simple curiosity.  By the end I was quite simply appalled.  The moment she stopped talking my phone rang.  I picked up to a fundraising call from the DNC.

"Did you just watch Palin's speech?" I asked, and the nice young man said no, he'd been phonebanking all night, and how was it?

I'll admit, I sort of lost it and just started pouring words into his ear.  "We're in big trouble," I said.  "First of all, the crowd loved her...they ate it up.  Second, she's attractive and has this weird sort of charisma.  And she's mean. And she lies like a Republican, I mean, really, really lies!  She is going to be a huge problem for us for a long time to come."

"Maybe she won't be so bad," he soothed.  "Can we put you down for a donation?"  Yes, he most certainly could.

Watching that speech (with that self-righteous sneer) was like experiencing the onset of an illness.  Not like a cold virus that would inconvenience you for a few days, not even like a flu virus that would slam you hard into bed leaving you wandering through feverish dreams for a week or two.  The force of Palin's personality felt like (and proved to be) something deeper and scarier and more destructive, like some strain of malaria that you can never quite shake.  Every time you feel better and think it's gone it permeates the media and shakes the body politic yet again.

It's hard for me to believe she won't have some spiteful surprise up her sleeve for this convention.

Of course I have other, happier images as well, another favorite being Sasha and Malia waving hello to Daddy on the giant screen at the 2008 Democratic convention. Perhaps it's just the way my brain is wired, in that it remembers the recoil from the threat more than the yearning towards the promise.

So, tell me your stand-out political convention memories, and bonus points to anyone who recounts their memories of the Democratic convention/Police Riot of 1968.

So, what memories do you carry from past or present political conventions?  Or do you not watch them at all?

I'm listening.

?

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
