Failed Congressional hopeful Wendy Rosen, the western Shore Democrat, has written an apology:
Rosen apologizes.
According to another news article, ex-Congressman Wayne Gilchrest might be interested in running.
No matter how it's sliced, it will be a write-in campaign, because Rosen dropped out a few days after the deadline for a replacement candidate to have his or her name on the ballot.
Whether he'll try for the Democratic Central Committees' endorsement or not isn't clear. The logical step-in is John LaFerla, who lost in a primary to Rosen by 57 votes. (A third hopeful siphoned off about 3,000 votes which might well have put LaFerla on top had she not run). Central committees from all counties in the 1st District will vote on who the Democratic replacement is.
Gilchrest, nominally a Republican, was the 18-year incumbent primaried by Andy Harris and his outside money in 2008. Wayne (as he's known in his old district) never accepted anything but individual donations, so when Andy came in with PAC money and Club for Growth money, he was blindsided. It was a campaign filed with blistering negative TV advertising.
Gilchrest is a moderate intellectual who has been 100 percent in support of sustainable agriculture throughout Delmarva, and of cleaning up the Chesapeake Bay. He well-respected and well-known -- and he also is known for a lingering dislike of Harris.
The colorless Frank Kratovil, a Blue Dog Dem, narrowly beat Harris in 2008 and then got flogged in 2010. Part of it undoubtedly was his wishy-washy flip-flop zig-zag position -- or lack of one -- on the ACA. This in a district where almost every county is designated "medically underserved" and obesity and lack of preventive care are epidemic.
Harris put some years in the Maryland legislature voting "no" on anything except lower taxes and has courted the tea party vote. He works in obstetrics as an anaesthesiologist and like to make sure he uses "Congressman Andy Harris, M.D." as often as possible. His entire career has been spent in the orbit of Johns Hopkins, except for a stint as a naval doctor in Desert Storm.
Wikipedia:
Harris earned his B.S. in biology (1977) and his M.D. (1980) from The Johns Hopkins University.
The University's Bloomberg School of Hygiene and Public Health conferred the M.H.S. in 1995 in Health Policy & Management and also Health Finance & Management.
... He has worked as an anesthesiologist, as an Associate Professor of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine, and as Chief of Obstetric Anesthesiology at the Johns Hopkins Hospital.
Here's the
news article on Rosen's abrupt departure after it was disclosed that she got carried away voting in both Florida and Maryland in 2006 and 2008.
And her appearance in the spring when she was stumping with Barbara Mikulski ... saying she's a self-described "recovering Republican":
