Charles Krauthammer -- where, oh where did they get this guy? -- now has a solution to the Republican's HoH (Hating on Hispanics) problem. Never mind issues about education, jobs, and fair treatment -- which concern Hispanics just as much as anyone -- Krauthammer thinks the only thing that stops them from becoming Republicans is the immigration issue.
Hispanics can trust Jan Brewer! (Credit: Donkey Hotey / Flickr).
Here's the Great Mind at work this day over at
National Review, your source of Wingnut-Free Conservatism® (or not):
It requires but a single policy change: Border fence plus amnesty. Yes, amnesty. Use the word. Shock and awe — full legal normalization (just short of citizenship) in return for full border enforcement.
[Self-serving blather omitted.] But many Hispanics fear that there will be nothing beyond enforcement. So, promise amnesty right up front. Secure the border with guaranteed legalization to follow on the day the four border-state governors affirm that illegal immigration has slowed to a trickle.
A brilliant variation on the ol'
bait and switch scheme. Ladies and gentlemen, may I present: Charles Krauthammer, FFM (Flim-flam Man)! Yep, lure 'em in with "amnesty" and just give Jan Brewer and Rick Perry veto power over the nation's immigration policy! That will turn Hispanics into Republicans
eo instante!
Oh, and BTW, note the little fine print there: full legal normalization (just short of citizenship). Now, there is no such legal status currently in existence under our law. Currently (with a few exceptions) lawful status in the U.S. consists of either non-immigrant temporary admissions (such as students or tourists), which do not lead to citizenship, and permanent admission to the U.S. which leads to citizenship.
The sage Krauthammer proposes a third path, apparently, which is permanent admission to the United States which does NOT lead to citizenship. Because what is it that we don't want immigrants to do? Vote! And only citizens can vote. (Hey, I thought Hispanics were secretly Republicans even if they don't know it yet!)
(P.S. -- be sure to visit superseiyan's fine diary on this scam.)
