I am surprised they published My latest LTL in the local newspaper. It is online here. They published 5 others. The others are all of the wingnuttery variety as this is a very conservative newspaper. Follow the link and you can find the others if you want to have an inside look at insanity.

 This is mine:

Sometimes when we are in the middle of a big moment in history, we are blinded by partisanship. The debt ceiling fight is such a moment.

We have a far right group of ideologues who are demanding concessions they could not get because they could not win the presidential election or the Senate. They are saying that if the country does not accede to their demands, they will blow up the economy. The Republicans are willing to take everyone with them because they are so sure of their own righteousness.

If the Democrats in 2006 were to act in the same manner, they would have insisted that President Bush do away with the tax cuts he had passed when he had control of both the House and the Senate at the beginning of his Presidency. In spite of the Democrats having both the Senate and the House in 2006, they knew they could not get past the Presidential veto. They respected the Constitution and what the Founding Fathers had in mind when designing the separation of powers and how they should operate.

The Republican Party obviously does not. They are in it to win by any means necessary.

For the President, this is not about winning this particular political battle. It is about how these political battles should be fought. He is going to win this battle against those who would use extortion as a means to a political end.

It is terrifying what will happen if the Republicans go through with their threat and severely damage ours and the world's economy. It is going to cause much pain here and around the world. The only silver lining is that will be the end of the Republican Party as a viable political entity.

I have never been more proud of this President, and history is going to record this as one his finest moments.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

You can add a private note to this diary when hotlisting it:

Are you sure you want to remove your recommendation? You can only recommend a diary once, so you will not be able to re-recommend it afterwards.

  •  Pay Our Debts Congress! (12+ / 0-)

I completely agree. President Obama is doing the right thing by not bowing down and accepting "negotiation" by threat and extortion. It seems clear that we can't allow the Tea Pparty Republicans to win this battle our system of government will be crippled.

I may lose my job if this continues but I stand with the President in considering it non-negotiable that the United States will pay the debts it has accrued. We have plenty of resources and plenty of money. Now we just need our Representatives in Congress to do the right thing and pay our debts instead of threatening economic ruin if we don't comply with their radical agenda.

    •  Yes it might get pretty ugly (9+ / 0-)

The thing is that putting up with this nonsense cripples our countries ability to be governed at all. These self inflicted wounds have to stop. The problem is what people believe. this is a LTL and my reply in my local newspaper. How do you talk to people who are not in reality.

      Wingnut Letter:

Obama warns the nation that if he doesn't get his way with debt ceiling increases, then Social Security checks will be in danger of not being paid on time.
This is an outright lie! By federal statute these checks must be paid, and on time. This program has at the present enough money in it to last up to 2038. Obama is lying to you again.

This miserable excuse for a president also tells us that if nothing is done about the debt ceiling by Oct. 17, our nation will, for the first time in our history, default. Another outright lie!
This president apparently has so much disdain for the Constitution — and us — that he doesn't or has never read it. The nation's interest on our debts must be paid for first. We have more revenue (taxes) coming into government coffers than at any time in its history, and according to the GAO we have enough to fund 75 percent of the government with what we have on hand.
This so-called government shutdown has affected about 20 percent of government workers whom the government itself calls non-essential. The government tells us about 40 percent are designated as non-essential. In the private sector the definition of a "non-essential employee" is called "unemployed."
The GAO also has found $125 billion in fraud and waste in government. By cutting non-essential employees from the government and stopping government fraud and waste, we could easily survive not raising our debt limit and have a leaner, more responsive government.
Warren Buffett, whom Obama loves to quote, has said that the nation could go on for a year without a debt limit increase without any major problems. This president is a pathological liar who makes Bill Clinton look like an altar boy.
      Ron Portal

      My reply:

Looks like Ron has been watching and reading the Conservative fantasy media such as Fox News, NewsMax, Human Events etc. Perhaps he is getting his information from emails his right wing friends circulate. Lets go over some of his more obvious nonsense.
Yes Social Security is good till 2038 and good for 80% thereafter if we do nothing. When we pay our Social Security it goes into the Social Security Trust Fund. This money is loaned to the US government in the form of treasury notes. If we default on these notes there will be no money to pay for Social Security checks. The President is not lying.
If we do not increase the debt ceiling give the treasury department the authority to borrow money by the sometime around the middle of October our intake of funds will be less than the obligations that Congress has signed into law. We will be forced to default on legal obligations already signed into law by the Congress and signed by the President. Again the President is not lying.
Ron goes on to say the President has disdain for the Constitution or has never read it. There is nothing in the law or the Constitution that says the interest payment be paid first. The Constitution says the executive( The president ) must follow the law. All spending bills are laws and the President would be acting outside the law if he decided which debt he would have to obey and which he would not. Unlike Ron, The President clearly understands the issues involved.
The list of unessential workers include most of Nasa, food inspectors, most of the EPA, accident inspectors, 90% of the IRS, many in the FBI, Homeland Security, VA people who do intakes on veterans benefits etc. In Ron’s fantasy world it would be delightful for these people and many others to be unemployed. Of course, he would be just like his fellow right wing people who went ballistic over the Washington Memorial being closed or when something he needs cannot be done. He wants his cake and eat it too.
As to cutting fraud and waste in the Government, cutting so-called non-essential will result in a leaner more responsive government this is something we can work on but for now it is imperative that we increase the debt limit to avoid the catastrophe that will happen if we do not. In the words of Warren Buffet:
American politicians should cease to use the debt ceiling in their negotiations, U.S. billionaire Warren Buffett said, comparing the practice to a nuclear bomb threat. “It ought to be banned as a weapon.
Warren Buffett understands the consequences of the policies that Ron Portal and the right wing advocates. It would be a catastrophe.
      As to these statements:
This miserable excuse for a president
Obama is lying to you again.
      Another outright lie!
This president is a pathological liar who makes Bill Clinton look like an altar boy.
These are across the line. I could call Ron a liar but that would not be true and though his politics are crazy he is a good guy. He, like his right wing counterparts ,actually believe their nonsense. That is the scary part.

Does not matter. It is like talking to a tree.

      •  Reason, Facts and Logic (4+ / 0-)

are not respected by right wing media.  They have an agenda and it is driven largely by hatred.  This is picked-up and adopted as truth within the bubble and repeatedly reinforced within a closed circle of thought.

As your exchange shows, it is very very difficult to engage a tea party zealot in a normal conversation because basic facts and ordinary discourse are discarded in favor of a political script which will be defended with religious fervor.

Your effort is commendable.  When engaging, I believe style and attitude is important - which you exhibited very well.  All you can do is state facts in a logical manner and emphasize reason without engaging in personal attack or emotional insults.  Nice job.

Eventually, reasonable minds will prevail.  It may take awhile for the emotion and hatred to subside but, in the end, history records the truth.  Maybe we can take solace in that today.

  •  Excellent letter (13+ / 0-)

I didn't click the link to read the other letters.  I went to redstate briefly last night, so I already know what they are saying.

But when their outrageous demands are posted beside your cool clear logic, it seems that the "moderates" who read your local newspaper can draw only one conclusion:  the GOP is truly crazy, and their party is shrinking to the true dead-enders.

I am beginning to think a win in the House in 2014 is actually possible.

I remain much more pessimistic than you. I fear the President will pull defeat from the jaws of victory.

I hope you are correct in your reading of future history, but these opponents of the country are rabid ideologues. They will never give in and short of impeachment of their representatives for failing to uphold their oath, I don't see a way out of this.

His future and his family's future is golden - golden like the 1%. Mine, and my children's (and 80% of this country's) future doesn't look so great now. If this brinkmanship goes to the extreme, the future gets a lot worse

ou are coming from. I was pissed at the President for a long time about various issues. The reality is that Politics is the art of the possible and maybe it is a little late but the President finally understands what he is dealing with are bullies. Bullies are either kissing your ass or kicking your ass. If he plays his card well maybe we can win the house and get rid of the filibuster. If we do that we will see where the President really stands. For now I fully support what he is doing and I am proud of him. He makes me feel proud to be a Democrat.
