Welcome to the Kitchen Table! It's the end of the week and time to kick back with a movie and some good nibbles. Tonight's theme is:
Spies
This became quite a genre when the James Bond franchise got started (hey, there was a Cold War on) -- and it has carried on to this day even though the old Cold War is over. TV series such as Burn Notice and Covert Affairs have been popular -- and are available on Netflix. But so are the following films. Tonight I offer one indie flick, two classic spy comedies, and a Bollywood love story (because spies get lonely). Movies are below the fold!
The Red Machine
This 2009 indie film is about a cold fish of a Naval lieutenant who is tasked with getting an unruly thief to help him break into a Japanese diplomat's home in 1935. This odd couple's object is to figure out a coding machine (something like Enigma) without the Japanese knowing. I found this little film to be rather stylish and quite funny in parts. Check out the trailer:
Hopscotch
A classic from 1980! Walter Matthau plays a seasoned CIA operative who has had enough of a bullying boss. He destroys his personnel file and disappears to write his memoirs -- mailing a chapter at a time to a whole bunch of people. The chase is on! Glenda Jackson is charming as his accomplice and Ned Beatty is perfect as the awful boss. This is a lot of fun and does not get old with re-viewing.
Ek Tha Tiger
This is a 2012 film from India about an Indian spy called Tiger who falls in love with a woman spying for Pakistan. How will they ever make this relationship work? Funny, with stunts that will remind you of the Hong Kong school of film making but with a Bollywood beat. I think I need to see this again! Here are two trailers for you.
Charade
This is a classic romantic comedy from 1963 starring Cary Grant and the lovely Audrey Hepburn. She finds out that her late husband was not who she thought he was. And said dead husband was in possession of some stolen money that some wicked men and the U.S. Treasury are after. No one, nothing is at it seems! This one never gets old and is a great romp through Paris, to boot.
Please share your favorite spy movies, your plans for the week end, and menus!
