“Cities have the capability of providing something for everybody, only because, and only when, they are created by everybody.”

Those were the words of Jane Jacobs, the visionary urban planning activist who once wrote a treatise declaring “Downtown is for People.”

Jacobs went to bat against former Parks Commissioner Robert Moses, chairing a committee to stop Mose’s plan to build an expressway through Washington Square Park and the West Village.

May 3rd; this Saturday would have been Jacob’s 97th birthday, and New Yorkers are invited to take to her beloved city streets for the Municipal Arts Society’s annual Jane’s Walk. facebook

Just Say No, to spectra energy's New Jersey, New York City natural gas transportation pipeline!

Occupy The Pipeline Facebook

Occupy the Pipeline is opposed to the Fossil Fuel Industry, fracking, tar sands & corporate exploitation of Natural Resources at the expense of the Planet.

Shut down spectra, rockaway lateral, constitution & keystone pipelines. We support Renewable Energy.

This is a NYC-based coalition that is fighting to resist fracking, the "natural" (methane) gas that comes from the process, and to ban legislature and stop the construction of the pipelines that supply it.

Activists, environmentalists, artists, theater makers, and concerned citizens that intend to shut down the Spectra Energy NY-NJ Expansion Pipeline, stop the construction of the Rockaway Pipeline in the Far Rockaways, Queens, and to form the movement that will convince Governor Cuomo to BAN FRACKING in New York State!

We are in Solidarity with the fight against tar sands in Alberta, Canada & in Opposition to the kxl Pipeline.

1 Spectra has completed construction on a 16 mile pipeline, under Staten Island, Bayonne, NJ, Jersey City, Hoboken and under the Hudson River, right into the West Village.

This pipeline, 30-42 inch diameter (the same size that blew up in San Bruno, CA) would pump massive quantities of toxic, radon-laced fracked gas straight into our homes, putting us at risk of cancer and vulnerable to explosions.

We will stand up and fight back against this unnecessary, unsustainable energy infrastructure. We know better. We know pipelines supply what the industry calls Natural Gas, that is actually methane  gas (a fossil fuel) and that is not a "clean" energy source at all!

It's showdown time! ✌✌✌✌✌ Voting Info 2014 Midterm Elections Action Alert/Even More Political Activism Needed ♥ A Very Busy Year

2 The HR 2606 NYC Natural Gas Supply Enhancement Act has been approved by the Senate, which authorizes using Gateway National Park for the construction of the Rockaway Pipeline in the same area just devastated by Hurricane Sandy.

Join the movement to bridge the disconnect and confusion fueled by the oil and gas industry.

Natural gas is not clean energy. It is methane gas, it comes from a dirty process called hydraulic fracturing that is poisoning our water supply and the gas is laced with radon!

Lets get off fossil fuels, and build infrastructure for renewable and sustainable energy sources.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
