The NY Times has called the primary for Cuomo and Hochul on the Democratic line - BUT!!!
...The apparently strong performance by Ms. Teachout, a legal scholar of political corruption who had never run for office, was an embarrassing rebuke to Mr. Cuomo from his party’s liberal wing, and it could put a sizable dent in any national aspirations he may hold.
Her support was driven in part by frustration among Democrats with Mr. Cuomo’s carefully calibrated way of governing. While he has been lauded by progressives in New York and nationally for his bold action on topics like same-sex marriage and gun control, his posture on nuts-and-bolts issues like budgeting and taxes has leaned more toward the right.
Here's the break down of the voting by the Times with 63% and 62% of the votes in:
Andrew M. Cuomo 195,753 59.7%
Zephyr Teachout 119,555 36.4
Randy Credico 12,766 3.9
Kathy Hochul 183,576 59.0%
Tim Wu 127,524 41.0
The report by Thomas Kaplan has further analysis and some feedback from voters on their choices. Teachout and Wu were always long shots - but they managed a more than credible showing considering the disparity of financial resources and name recognition. Cuomo may be respected, feared even - but there's not a lot of enthusiasm out there for him among the Democratic base. Not mentioned in the Times article was
the last minute relocation of polling places, for whatever vote suppression that might have accomplished.
There are several points to consider from these results. 1) Has Andrew Cuomo (and corporate Democrats of similar persuasion) learned anything from this? 2) Will progressives put more effort into primaries now, where their turnout can have a huge effect? 3) Will they start getting some respect from establishment Democrats? 4) And what about November?
8:50 PM PT: Update For some extra interest, take a look at the comments on Kaplan's article. Cuomo may have gotten the votes - but Teachout and Wu scored a victory.
Wed Sep 10, 2014 at 4:17 AM PT: UPDATE: I like this message from Bold Progressives about yesterday.
This is a victory for progressives everywhere. Andrew Cuomo's corrupt economic policies hurt New York working families. In a few short weeks, Zephyr Teachout gave Andrew Cuomo the race of his political life -- even though she was outspent 11-to-1, and fueled only by the hands and hearts of her supporters.
The national message for politicians is clear. If you run as a Democrat and govern as a Republican, you can be challenged and held accountable.
