We've entered that lovely time of year known by some as Christmahannukwanzadan, or ThanksChristmukah or any variety of other mashups. A conversation with K1 (who gave me permission to use this!) led to tonight's diary. Grab a calendar and follow me below the traditional decorated Christmas turkey-shaped dreidel after a word from our sponsor...
Here at Top Comments we strive to nourish community by rounding up some of the site's best, funniest, most mojo'd & most informative commentary, and we depend on your help!! If you see a comment by another Kossack that deserves wider recognition, please send it either to topcomments at gmail or to the Top Comments group mailbox by 9:30pm Eastern. Please please please include a few words about why you sent it in as well as your user name (even if you think we know it already :-)), so we can credit you with the find!
We all divide our year into periods one way or another. For some of us it's a strict these are the months of the year method. For others, it's a little different. K1 shared with me her method for dividing up the most of the year, which I am fairly sure she considers far more fun than the first half:
Birthday
Summer
Back to School
Halloween
Pre-Christmas (K1 and her doctor both understand others may call this "Thanksgiving" but they know it is really the pre-Christmas dinner dress rehearsal)
Christmas
Post Christmas
Valentine's Day
Easter
Spring
First thing I notice is they're not necessarily month-related. Second thing is that it overlaps how I keep track of my year by events:
New Year's (swap last year's bulging tax/healthcare document folder for this year's empty one)
Valentines Day/ (make sure reds are clean)
School Vacation Week I (oh hey, everyone else went skiing)
St. Patrick's Day (make sure greens are clean)
Easter (find three different white chocolate bunnies)
School Vacation Week II (oh hey, everyone else went to Florida)
Memorial Day (do those shorts still fit?)
School Ends
Birthday-a-palooza (K1, K2, me in 4 weeks)
Summer Camp (aka Driver Appreciation Month)
Back to School
Halloween
Thanksgiving (Until Santa is spotted in the Macy's Parade)
Christmas`
How do you mark out your year?
BeninSC and I mark our Mondays and Tuesdays by sharing the writing/formatting duties here at Top Comments, where we divide into the Three Tops...
Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down.
Two comment 'Flags:'
Flagged by KimmieInIN, this comment by Lily O Lady describes the laboratory aspect of the Wisconsin gubernatorial campaign for the Kochs.
Flagged by FoundingFatherDAR, this comment by side pocket explains a virtual litmus test for prospective beach trips!
From enhydra lutris:
In his own diary Obama's Bipartisan Achievements, Joe Shikspack ably lays out the problem, the solution and the key action item for today, tomorrow and the future in this comment.
From Ninepatch:
In Laura Clawson's diary Women are veterans, too, Navy Vet Terp shares a deeply personal story of his mother's experience as an Army nurse in WWII. It is not only a clear example of the brutality of war, but it points to the role women have served in wars for as long as this country has existed. They may have been invisible to many, but to every soldier, sailor, airman, and Marine they touched, they were the kind face who understood in a way only a military person could.
Also, same diary, wishingwell shares her story, affected by the prevalence of sexual harassment and assault against women in the military.
:-) Peace.
From brillig:
Krotor helpfully fixed Bob Love's question. In Shaun King's Five observations about the 'public safety' press conference from Gov. Jay Nixon and team
