Senator Mitch McConnell (R-Gang of Forty-Seven), in an article by Huffington Post is cited as saying he would not allow Loretta Lynch's nomination to come to the Senate floor for a vote, unless the Democrats agree to help pass the Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act.
That bill has attached to it language that would prohibit Federal funds from being used for abortion, which the Democrats say was not in the original bill. Not using funding for abortions is all about helping victims of trafficking (particularly those who were raped).
I was under the impression that the Republican Party absolutely despised Attorney General Eric Holder. As long as they continue to hold up Ms. Lynch's nomination, Mr. Holder stays in the position.
Both Senators Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and Chuck Schumer (D-NY) note this is further evidence of the GOP's inability to govern; Senator Reid's spokesman noted on Twitter that the Senate is capable of working on two things at once.
5:29 PM MT: CNN reports on the issue, with an interview of Senator McConnell here, and Bloomberg reports on it here.
The presenter at CNN actually asks Senator McConnell a couple hard questions, which he deflects with word salad.
