An observation from a homeless man in New York City.
As a homeless New Yorker and panhandler I would like you to take a moment and consider something. This knowledge I'm about to share is something all homeless people deal with daily and it may be something you've never even thought about. I am certain you are probably a good person who only has the best intentions and a strong moral character. Not everyone does. Shocker right? Turn on the news as a reminder.
Believe it or not there are people out there that hate the homeless beggars and they will go to any length to hurt them. Spitting in and contaminating food is very common. They then pass it off as a clean healthy donation to a needy person who is simply hungry. I've unfortunately been the target of this vile act a few times and have gotten very sick. It's just not worth taking leftovers when the goal is to survive and stay healthy. Not every donation is contaminated but it's a crap shoot literally. You never know and it can jeopardize your health greatly.
Here's an idea that you may want to consider. Please don't be offended when people refuse your leftovers or food you bought. Often times they are just being cautious and for good reason. Pro tip: If you yell at or reprimand a homeless person that is not going to ease their apprehension. It won't convince me for example that you are to be trusted. Trust is a two way street.
So here is the idea that many people already understand. Unfortunately many more do not. This is for everyone's safety and sanity. Talk to a homeless person and ask them if they are hungry. Actually go out of your way and bring them inside and let them order some food. Take a moment and treat them as you would like to be treated. This process is way better than just assuming what they want to eat and then not even speaking to them. It's called respect and dignity. They then know where the food is coming from and feel comfortable.
Ask them to tell you their story. Maybe you'll learn something from them. They were probably very much like you at one point and deserve compassion. Please just consider my idea. Set your pride aside and take a moment out of your day for someone else. Thank you.
