Obama now has the votes he needs to avoid derailment of the pact in the Senate
Sen. Maria Cantwell is the last Democratic senator to announce a position on the Iran nonproliferation deal. After
meeting again with Energy Secretary Earnest Moniz, she's come down
in favor.
That means that Senate Republicans don't have the votes to pass a measure of disapproval; barring any Democratic changes of heart, President Obama will now be able to move the deal forward.
5:26 PM PT: To clarify, while this means the Democrats now in theory have the votes to filibuster a Republican bill of disapproval outright even without the reluctant Sen. Coons, with or without that filibuster GOP theories of blocking the deal by overriding the promised presidential veto are now well and truly dead. With all Democrats now stating their position, there simply aren't enough defectors for Republicans to even come close.
