I’ve written under the Top Comments ‘umbrella almost from the day I joined Daily Kos. I came to Daily Kos with a great deal of community experience online. I was long familiar with the signal to noise conundrum in the online world. I’m sure you’re familiar with the metaphor, but to narrow the definition slightly, I’ll call ‘signal’ desirable or worthwhile information and exchange, and ‘noise’ everything that detracts/distracts from it.
Out and about on Daily Kos, for me, the noise often seems to dominate. I like a bit more structure, a bit more familiarity, a bit more consistency. Here I am among friends. Regulars. Teammates. Even if the topic under discussion on a given night isn’t overtly political, a unifying political matrix still ties it all together. We fight together, we play together, we learn together. We share the victories, the defeats and the uncertain times. We give each other strength and courage, a sense of not being so alone.

Right now we are in a building phase to this next most important election of our lifetime. Each election the last decade or so has seemed more critical than the last, and absolutely this coming one fits that description. We seem on the cusp of a delightful and hard-won ascendancy, yet facing some of the most frightening reversals we could ever imagine.
For me, Top Comments is that home base I sought for many years. The background I need for waging the next battles. I come here for ideas. For company. For energy. For stimulation. For inspiration. For encouragement. Sometimes for sanctuary. Here, this community provides it in spades. Fine minds, even finer hearts. Great, bold visions, and the intent and the will to bring it into being.
But Top Comments also fits a niche on Daily Kos, seeking to increase visibility for quality comments, site-wide, in the way Community Spotlight (formerly Diary Rescue) tries to do for diaries. Because the site can see from 10,000 to 50,000 comments in a day (compared to 200 to 500 diaries, thereabouts), we have to ask for help. We need and depend on your eyes and your insights in finding comments worthy of additional readership. Thankfully, you guys send in hundreds of comments every year, to spread fine ideas or insights or humor or caring, or a combination of all of those.
That act, of submitting the creative contributions of others, broadens their creative effort through one of your own, of sharing. And though skeptics may disagree, in our view, it makes us ALL stronger, and more effective. You strengthen signal, to the detriment of noise. And you reinforce our primary truth. Democrats = signal, Republicans = noise. That is a choice we have made, a choice we continue to make, just as it is a choice they have made and continue to make.
Thank you so much for helping my world with brilliant signal! I hope I am able to provide a little of that for you, in turn! In this rewarding pastime of writing for this magical community diary series.
On to tonight’s comments! Formatted by one of my favorite signalers on the planet, brillig! (Thank you, my friend!)
Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down.
