Tue Nov 03, 2015 at 4:06 PM PT (Steve Singiser): Welcome to round 2 of what will be long Election Night 2015! Polls have now closed in Virginia, where legislative battles will soon command our attention. Meanwhile, we are now in the second hour of following a very close gubernatorial battle in Kentucky.
Tue Nov 03, 2015 at 4:08 PM PT (Steve Singiser): That Kentucky's gubernatorial election, by the way, is not only close. It's confounding, thus far. A smattering of counties have come in, and it is like someone took an etch-a-sketch, and shook it up. There are some counties that went for Democrat Steve Beshear last time, which are going to Republican Matt Bevin in a landslide. But there are also a couple where it seems as if the Democrats are doing well in counties where the blue team normally tanks. This makes extrapolating where we think this thing will be at the end of the night pretty tough, in all honesty.
Tue Nov 03, 2015 at 4:12 PM PT (Steve Singiser): As more votes get tallied (and the AP is up to 17 percent reporting), that "Conway gap" is still pretty rigid. Conway is running 5-10 points behind the three Democrats who seemed favored to win prior to tonight: Alison Lundergan Grimes (Sec of State), Adam Edelen (Auditor), and Andy Beshear (Attorney General).
Tue Nov 03, 2015 at 4:22 PM PT (Steve Singiser): One piece of good (early) news for Democrats—they appear in good shape to reclaim the mayoralty of Indianapolis. Democrat Joe Hogsett leads Republican Chuck Brewer 58-41 with 17 percent of precincts reporting.
Tue Nov 03, 2015 at 4:23 PM PT (Steve Singiser): VA-HD-12: It's a tight race in one of the Democratic targets for the House of Delegates. Incumbent Joseph Yost only leads Democrat Laurie Buchwald 51-48 in early balloting.
Tue Nov 03, 2015 at 4:26 PM PT (Steve Singiser): KY-Gov: Big vote bump from the AP in Kentucky. Now with 34 percent reporting, Republican Matt Bevin leads the gubernatorial race over Democrat Jack Conway 50-46. Meanwhile, the trio of leading Dems (Edelen, A. Beshear, Lundergan Grimes) all have leads ranging for 2-6 points here.
Tue Nov 03, 2015 at 4:44 PM PT (David Jarman): VA-SD-07, SD-10: We have very preliminary numbers in two key Virginia state Senate races, and they're both flying in the face of conventional wisdom. In SD-07, Dem Gary McCollum's chances didn't seem very good, but he currently leads GOPer Frank Wagner 51-49 with 10 percent reporting. However, in SD-10, Dem Dan Gecker is trailing Glen Sturtevant 54-42 with 34 percent reporting.
In one other potential offense race for the Dems, in SD-13, wackadoodle Dick Black is leading Dem Jill McCabe 55-45 with 8 percent reporting.
Tue Nov 03, 2015 at 4:49 PM PT (David Jarman): KY-Gov: Meanwhile, back in Kentucky, there's not much room left for Jack Conway to make a move; he trails GOPer Matt Bevin 51-45 with 56 percent reporting. Presumably that will tighten as more central precincts from Louisville come in, but Jefferson Co. is more than three-quarters in, so there may not be enough gas left in the tank. (On the plus side, Andy Beshear, Adam Edelen, and Alison Lundergan Grimes lead their downticket races, though only by several hundred votes for Edelen.)
