… and welcome to another Baja Arizona Kos Open Thread. I am your alternate host, providing a bit of Baja news and of course pictures from my backyard.
We got polled!
DKos user DCMorgan1972DEM wrote this story and also this one about Arizona polling data just released this week. I'm hoping that this poll just shows that Dems without cell phones are voting for Hillary. Meanwhile, Hillary still has not called me (landline or cell)…
Our dumb state legislature
Thursday, the Tucson Weekly had an article about the "10 Terrible Bills at the Arizona Legislature". And they are indeed terrible. Read the article for the whole list (h/t Azazello). I want to highlight the only one of these to be actually signed by the middle-schooler masquerading as our governor: "#9. The Extort the Cities Act", SB1487.
Senate Bill 1487 would let members of the Legislature file a complaint with the Arizona Attorney General’s Office if they believe that any county, city or town has passed an ordinance that violates state law or the Arizona Constitution. If the AG concludes that the jurisdiction has passed an ordinance in violation of state law… then the state would withhold all state-shared revenues until the ordinance is repealed. There is no option for local jurisdictions to appeal through the courts.
Note that these are the same folks who regularly pass legislation that violates federal laws and the US Constitution, because "States' Rights" and "local control". It sounds like "local control" doesn't mean "where the people actually live". Next they'll pass a law in favor of plastic bags, and then Bisbee will lose all that sweet, sweet state funding for schools and roads.
Funny thing: Alabama recently passed a similar law after Birmingham tried to set a new minimum wage for itself that was higher than the federal minimum (the state of Alabama has no minimum wage of its own). Actually, it's not that funny at all — the whole mess just reeks of ALEC, doesn't it? Soon the whole country can be like Flint, Michigan. (Apologies & condolences to Flint. Here's some ways to help them out.)
AZ-02/AZ-03 news
I expect it to be quiet around here tonight, since Raúl Grijalva (AZ-03) is having his campaign kickoff & GOTV rally this evening, and Victoria Steele (AZ-02) will also be there. I know this because Steele re-posted Grijalva's Facebook notice of the event, in one of the extremely rare instances where she mentions an event in advance (and then always as a re-post of someone else's notice). I hope somebody at the rally encourages her to make more effort getting attention to her events before they happen.
Anyway, have fun at the rally, folks — I'll still be here when y'all get back.
What we learned from the Drumpf rally yesterday
